probably the best RETAIL subwoofer you can buy...,

...for this price range.I have never had a high opinion of Velodyne subs, but recently got to play with this one at a local Tweeter and came away pleasantly surprised. The bass was very tight, quick and accurate --- I should note that it was positioned in a corner (optimal for maximum output) and the listening room was only about 10x12, so don't know how it would sound in a bigger room. For its price of half a grand you could get the Internet-direct Hsu VTF-2 or SVS PB10 shipped which would probably outpower and outclass it, but if you are unreasonably leery of buying online sight unseen despite the reams of glowing professional and consumer reviews out there on those 2 makes, you could do far far worse than this Velodyne. It does have a remote which I must admit is a very attractive feature that the two Internet-direct models I mentioned above do not have, plus is more compact and attractive in appearance, and has a remote control that the others don't. However I would be very surprised if it could go as low or as loud, so if you are looking for powerful kick-in-the-chest deep bass during your movies, those other 2 would be a better deal. For music listening the Velodyne would probably have an edge though, it's very tight and quick.

I don't write many reviews but after listening to this subwoofer I had to write about it. First and foremost; I never understood the term "musical" when used to describe a subwoofer before. After all, a sub is just to fill in the bottom register I thought. Not so I've discovered! I had Sony, Polk, and Harman Kardon subs previous to this and this is the most wonderful sounding addition to my system I've ever made. I now understand when someone describes a sub as "musical". Bass notes are now distinguishable as notes with octave levels and tone rather than just thumps and booms as with the Polk and Harman Kardon. The Sony was just plain awful. It did take a little time with the setup, but that's the sweet thing about the Velodyne; it's customizable. While some might not value the need for a remote for their sub and to tell the truth I thought it was rather gimmicky at first, I've grown from if not totally needing it to understanding the value in having it. I don't use all the options on it, but if you read the manual and understand the significance of all the options, when it's tuned to your ear it's the sweetest sounding sub you could ever ask for. It makes A/B changes much easier to compare by doing them right from the listening "sweet spot" rather than getting up and down for changes. You hear differing nuances instantly. I bought the Velodyne hoping it would be the keeper I was looking for after my previous subs just left me looking for something I just couldn't put my finger on but was missing with the Polk and the HK. I found the "keeper". The size is not small, but it's not a beast. It fits well aesthetically with my other speakers as well with the wood grain top and sides and the piano gloss front. While it's tough to buy and return a sub due to the cost of freight shipping it back, if you can find one in a retailer close to you where you can return it rather cost affectively, try one and give it a chance while taking the time to set it up to your preferences. Once it's tuned in I know you'll understand what I mean about it sonically.

I have had this for about 4 years now and have never turned it up past about 30% of it capabilities and it really delivers a very tight and strong bass. I have it in the corner of a 12 x 20 room and it is more than enough. I am also in a townhouse and have had several complaints from both the neigbhors and my wife upstairts. It looks very classy with the gloss finish too. Buy it.
