Solid sub. Well worth the price!, September 29, 2005
This review is from: VELODYNE ACOUSTICS HGS-12 Subwoofer (Electronics)
I've had Velodyne HGS-12 sub about 5 years now. Very happy with it. It's my first and only sub. I use it with Cambridge Soundworks New Ensemble speakers and Onkyo TX-DS 777 receiver. I set the cross over at 80Hz. I listen mostly to classical and jazz music. So, I consider accurate sound reproduction to be the most important factor.
Strengths of this sub are the following:
1. Tight and well controlled bass. The bass is really tight and well controlled. You won't hear muddy sound.
2. At the same time, this sub is very powerful.
3. The sound blends well with my speakers.
4. Clean looks and compact size.
One weakness is that when the music is turned off and the room is quiet, you will be able to hear a very low humming noise. It's very unnoticeable. You'll have to be about a one or two feet from the sub to really hear it. I didn't hear it until someone else pointed it out. It's definitely unnoticeable when the music is playing.
With this sub, the entire system sounds better. Even my main speakers sound better with the sub. My guess is that's because more power is available for the high frequency from my receiver. You can adjust the volume of the sub. So, if you really want the windows or your house to shake, you can do that very easily.
Whether it's for pure audio or HT application, this sub does it very well. It was a lot of money at first, but I have no regrets. Very satisfied and highly recommended.
