From the Manufacturer

The Velodyne Impact-10 10-Inch Powered Subwoofer - Style and Power in a Compact Package

The Velodyne Impact Series subwoofers are stylish, affordable, high-output, low distortion subwoofers. They feature beautiful cabinets with black gloss lacquer trim that fit easily into your home, while their deep, defined bass brings your favorite movies and music to life - at very friendly prices. The 250W Impact-10 features a down firing port for high output with low distortion and produces amazing bass from a compact cabinet.

Stylish even without the front grill

Down-firing Port Design Minimizes Distortion

Velodyne subwoofers have always been known for accuracy, producing a fraction of the distortion by competitive subwoofers. The Impact-10 down-firing port design maximizes bass performance and output, while limiting any noise cause by air moving the port, maintaining musical accuracy and dynamic impact.

Superior Quality Drivers

Impact drivers are designed with massive magnets and 2-inch copper-wound voice coils to precisely match their MDP Amplifiers, maximizing the bass output and the bass extension of each subwoofer. The Impact Series long-throw excursion and high power handling capabilities allow these subwoofers to play deeper and louder than similarly priced products. Powerful magnet structures and costly voice coils quickly dissipate excess heat for exceptional reliability.

Meshes seamlessly with existing speakers
The Impact-10 subwoofer uses a highly efficient MDP amplifier for floor-shaking bass. Unlike competitive IC amp designs, the dynamic MDP amplifier generates more reserve power to accurately reproduce the most critical bass information. The durable MDP amp is engineered with two unique protection circuits to insure long-term reliability. These "green" amplifiers are engineered to use less electricity to produce their amazing output.

Quality Features for a Great Price

The Impat Series of subwoofers come with a number of superior features to enhance your home theater. The MDP amplifiers have more dynamic headroom for high impact sound. Each subwoofer comes with high quality long-throw drivers and 2-inch copper-wound voice coils. The adjustable, superior quality crossover system matches with the Impact subwoofer with existing main speakers. The Phase adjustment allows the user to maximize bass blend with existing main speakers. The auto on/off setting conserves energy and the small, compact cabinets will fit in any room of your home.

Velodyne Acoustics

Velodyne Acoustics, builders of the world's number one rated subwoofers for 25 years, is proud the unveil the Impact series of stylish, affordable, high-output, low distortion subwoofers. The Impact Series boasts attractive cabinets with black lacquer trim that easily fit into your home, while their deep, defined, accurate bass brings your favorite movies and music to life--at a very friendly price. I purchase this unit to replace an old subwoofer. After extensive reading, I decided on the Velodyne Impact-10. After about 36 hours of 'breaking in' the speaker, I noticed the tight lower extension to my B&W 803 speakers and produced a very musical replication of double-basses and very tight timpani sounds. Very satisfied and highly recommended for small rooms with good speakers. (I run a recording studio at Beloit College and the system that the Velodyne is associated with, aside from the B&W speakers are: Naim Integrated amp, Macintosh G5, Cambridge Audio DAC, Musical Fidelity headphone amp, Rega turntable and audioquest interconnects.)

I'm actually surprised at the lack of reviews on these units, but as they are relatively new, I guess that's to be expected. I recently had a Klipsch sub's amp burn out on me and decided to replace it with something a little beefier (It gave me 7 years of love). But as the outage was unplanned, I didn't want to spend a large sum on the replacement. I was looking at the Velondyne vx-10 which has had a lot of nice reviews and could be picked up online for as low as $140 or so, though all brick and mortars I have contacted sell them for ~$249. I would have picked one up even despite the odd color scheme, but found that Velondyne had released the Impact series recently, and what reviews I could find suggested that they had significantly greater output with the kind of sound quality you would expect from Velondyne. They looked much nicer too.
The connections are nice, I would have preferred the crossover frequency knob was a little more clearly labeled, but since there's a gradual roll off, it shouldn't have any significant effect if you're a notch off.
The bass is easy and smooth, and if you set things up correctly, I found it a tad boomy at first, but spend a little time adjusting things and found that it had a very pleasantly flat (in a good way) deep output. I don't have the kind of location where I can turn it up too much, and I think, perhaps, for my apartment complex, this woofer is ridiculously overpowered. But you can leave the volume down and still enjoy a nice pleasant "punch" even when it's hardly audible. I'll be moving soon, and I have a feeling even with a moderately large living room and some yard space, I'll always risk angering the neighbors if I ever leave the volume up to high.

My system consists of a Sony reciever STR-DG720. I have been using all Bose for quite some time. Front speakers goto the Bose subwoofer, then to the dual cubes. The rear speakers are a second set of Bose cubes. I am also using the Bose center channel. The system was sounding great, but lacking something. I have always heard, Bose, all highs no lows. Well sad to say this is true. The bose sub just doesnt cut it, for music or movies. So after much research, and talking to people in the business, i purchased this Impact 10 from amazon.
First, it came in 2 days, as the 2 day option i selected promised, but i just wanted to thank amazon for that, they always have been great with shipping. But now to the point. I have a 15x24 room, with a 61 inch LED engine DLP on the 1 side of the room, and now the Impact 10 in the corner beside the tv. This sub FILLS the room. Music comes to life, it fills in all the mids, and lows i was missing. I listen to everything, i have tested it with RnB, Rap, even Country and Drum n Bass. Everything now comes to life. As for movies, all i can say is WOW. Transformers, the first 10 minutes, amazing~!, Black Hawk Down, AMAZING.
I would deffinatly recomend this sub to anyone debating purchasing a 10" sub. I had the Polk 10, the JBL 10 and this in my cart over and over for 2 days. After talking to my buddy who resells audio equipment, he assured me, spending the little extra would be worth it. You can get the Polk 12 for less then this Velodyne 10, and i would say your wasting your time and money. This 10 does a great job!. A+ in my book. I hope this review helps atleast 1 person!
Im going back enjoying the new Stereo Setup!
* As i was previewing my post, the wife came down and said " Just so you know the house is shaking. * - thought id pass that along. ;P ( it is set to half volume )

My first impression of the Velodyne Impact 10 was accurate and lasting. When I first picked it up I was amazed how light-weight it is (about 22 lbs.). It also sounds light-weight. My second impression was also lasting and accurate. It is a handsome-looking little box. It is also a handsome-sounding little box. The opening piano chords from Adele's Live at the Royal Albert Hall rang with a realistic resonance, but this is no boom box. It has a very tight and musical sound that is a delight to listen to.
I performed some testing on the Impact 10, using the ground-plane method, outside. The frequency response is specified at 32-140 Hz ± 3 dB. I measured -3 dB at 34 Hz in my tests, which is close enough to say that I agree with their spec. Testing also showed nearly fixed group delay above 40 Hz, and an exponential-decay impulse response; both looked very good. One concern I had with the downward-firing port was interference with a carpeted floor, so I tested the Impact 10 on a hard surface and with a carpet over that. My surprise was that the speaker had a smoother frequency response with the carpet. Some ripple in the FR was prevalent around the port resonance at 35 Hz, but reduced with the carpet. Apparently the damping provided by the carpet is a good thing.
However, the spec and testing both agree that you will not get any sub-bass from the Impact 10. If you want a subwoofer to reproduce explosions and general rumble from the LFE track in your home theater, you must look at, ahem, a heavier player. If you want a small and inexpensive woofer to play music with your satellite speakers, and/or in a small home theater setup, then you will be satisfied with the Impact 10.
