2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I have read a few JD books since the beginning of the year and I have really loved some of the others such as the Heiress and the Raider but I found Velvet Angel rather disappointing. I didn't like Elizabeth and I thought that Miles must have been a real "goer" to have had already 3 children at the tender age of 20! I suppose they didn't have contraception in those days...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great ending to the Velvet series!, October 23, 2001
I really enjoyed the ending to the Velvet series. We got to read Miles' story and got to know him. He was kinda aloof in the previous 3 books and it was nice to find out he is just as sexy and interesting as his brothers! The added mystery and chivalry that Miles possesed made him a very likable character to me. Miles' story is a little different than the others, he has to try and settle the bloody fued between his family the Montgomerys and the enemy, the Chatworths. How you might ask? He finds himself hopelessly attracted to the Chatworth sister, Elizabeth...

She was delivered to him rolled in a carpet, naked and looking like an angel sent from Heaven. Miles is confused on who she is as she stares at him with her deep emerald eyes and long honey blonde hair, maybe she IS an angel...until she comes at him with an axe of course...

Elizabeth is being used as a pawn in a deadly game between waring families and enemies. She vows to not surrender herself or her pride. She finds herself a captive of the most notorious of the Montgomery brothers, Miles. He is reputed to use women mercilessly and throw them aside. Getting them pregnant with his children for fun. She hated the Montgomery's...she despised them! They were the cause of her family's problems! They caused her poor sister-in-law to go mad! She was a Chatworth! The fierce hatred between these two waring familes has caused the king to become angry!

In a haze of murder, rape and betrayal, Miles and Elizabeth find themselves caught in the middle as their own hearts are torn. She wants him, yet she fears him and hates what he is...but can she tell her heart the same? Is her own family the cause of the problems? Can she learn to love a Montgomery? Can Miles learn not to hate? Can past brutalities fade enough to let love in? Can these two lost hearts end a raging fued that has lasted far too long before the king banishes them all?

A nonstop action/adventure/romance! A wonderful ending to the series! We get to meet up with past characters from the previous books, Judith & Gavin, Stephen & Bronwyn, Raine & Alyx and the many secondary characters that I have grown to love. There are MANY surprises in this last installent that cannot be missed and all the loose ends are finally tied up neatly. A sure keeper!
1. VELVET PROMISE- Gavin & Judith's story
2. Highland Velvet- Stephen & Bronwyn's story (my favorite!)
3. Velvet Song- Raine & Alyx's story
4. Velvet Angel- Miles & Elizabeth's story

4.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointing finish to a great series, December 11, 2000
By A Customer
But read it anyway - Miles is fascinating! If you've read any, or all, of the "Velvet" series and want to know about baby brother Miles, you'll need to read this. The first 2/3 of the book rates 5 stars - but the last portion falls flat. As for the good part - we finally get to know Miles, who's been a bit of an enigma for the first three books. He's actually very young (I believe about 20) but complex. My impression of him in the previous three books was that of a really smooth womanizer, with not much else to recommend him. Well, apparently, he is/was quite a womanizer, but that's his major (not fatal) flaw - just as his three brothers have flaws. He's not a bad guy - in many ways, he's nicer to Elizabeth than the others have been to their eventual wives. Elizabeth is not a simpering whiner (in my opinion) - she's pretty feisty and has a wonderfully soft heart, for someone who's had a crappy life. (Judith - book 1 - was abused by her dad too, but at least she had a mom to protect her.) Of course, the love story is just as passionate as you'd expect it to be, and the first part of the book features strong writing and story-telling. But things just derail at the end. I don't object to how she wraps the story up - in fact, I think the concept is excellent (I won't give it all away - but the women save the day). She just needed to take about 100 more pages to carry off the complex ending. In the process Miles strong personality just evaporates. And there's the very, very bizarre subplot (which plays a major role in setting up the finale) of Roger Chatsworth (yes, of the evil Chatsworths - Elizabeth is one too) and a woman. I actually welcomed an attempt to bring redemption to Roger, but it just doesn't work - it's almost creepy. The author did add a cute epilogue that lets you know how almost everyone turns out (no word on Jocelyn from "Velvet Promise" and "Velvet Song" or that nice Alan Fairfax who ended up helping Judith and Gavin in "Velvet Promise" - we'll assume they lived happily ever after!) Ultimately - read this to wrap the series up, but it's not as strong as the others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful conclusion to the series!, March 21, 2006
It was great fun reading the Velvet series. This is the series that began all of those other wonderful novels featuring gorgeous Montgomery men. I am glad the author became attached to the characters of this series and decided to create descendants from them. Velvet Angel is a wonderful conclusion to this series. In Velvet Song, Elizabeth Chatworth was wrapped inside a carpet and was delivered to Miles Montgomery naked. Miles Montgomery is the youngest of the brothers, only twenty years old, and women are his major weakness, which is why he is the father of numerous out-of-wedlock children. When he sees the beautiful, angelic Elizabeth, he falls in lust the moment he sees her. However, in spite of her delicate features, Elizabeth is far from docile. She wants to be returned to her brother Roger immediately, but Miles has other ideas. He wants to prove to her that the Montgomerys aren't the monsters that her brother has made them out to be. He wants her to learn about all of Roger's atrocities against his family. He also wants to get her into his bed, and then make her fall in love with him, as he is falling in love with her. It is no surprise that he is challenged by the only woman who doesn't swoon the moment she sees him. Elizabeth, frightened of men due to the bullying and abuse she suffered from her now dead sadistic older brother Edmund, doesn't want to fall in love with the enemy, especially the one who is most likely to break her heart. There are various twists throughout the novel.

For a while, I thought Miles was my second least favorite of the brothers (Gavin is my least favorite). After all, throughout the series we are told what a big playboy he is and how many children he has fathered throughout his many exploits. But it is nice to see that he is not the rake that I had originally thought he was. He loves his children and would have more if he could, and he is the proverbial knight in shining armor, always rescuing damsels in distress (this latter part of his personality had already been shown in the previous installments). He is sweet and attentive to Elizabeth, always kissing and touching her in a tender way, while she pushes him away or wipes away his kisses. She got on my nerves in the first few pages with all of those escape attempts. Ugh. But her attitude is understandable after the constant brainwashing she gets from Roger. I liked the development of protagonists' feelings and how she sees that the Montgomerys are honorable, loyal, sensual men. However, I thought her first sexual encounter with Miles was kind of abrupt. This is a woman who is wary of men and cannot stand the thought of a man touching her, yet she responds to Miles in a wanton way during that first encounter. Ah, well, at least her fear of men does not disappear altogether afterwards, although her erotic dance to create a diversion during one scene is also incongruous to her character. Anyway, I also liked the development of Roger. This character's many dimensions and complexities really impressed me. One thing I've always noticed about Jude Deveraux is that her characters have a great deal of depth, that they are not cardboard cutout characters. I thought the ending was hilarious and I loved the epilogue. I came to love these characters and I'm saddened to let them go. I should have savored this series and read them in a slower pace instead of reading the four books one right after the other. I love this series. It has become one of my favorite romantic series out there. I highly recommend everyone to read this wonderful collection, starting with The Velvet Promise, followed by Highland Velvet, Velvet Song and this one. You must read them in order.

5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting Closure to the Velvet Series, September 19, 2000
By
Abbys (Moreno Valley, CA United States) - See all my reviews
I read all Velvet series... my favorite of all is the first book, Velvet Promise. However, this book, Velvet Angel, also captured my heart. I was always intrigue by this "Miles" character ever since I read the Velvet Promise. He was described as a handsome, silent, mysterious and have the ability to seduce woman kindda guy. He was also supposedly loved by all woman. So, it was excitingly interesting for me to read his ways of seducing Elizabeth. Especially, when she was being stubbornly difficult. I like the way Miles finally used his first born son to capture Elizabeth's heart. It worked too! ..until he got busted! I have many favorite parts of this book but the ending was memorably funny. The Montgomery brothers and their wives all together, helping each other was heart warming. That is what family is all about! I thoroughly enjoyed this book. In the beginning it contains fear, hate, revenge, distrust and sadness but in the end it is full of love, trust, understanding & forgivness - A riveting end to the Velvet series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great closure to the 'Velvet' series...., March 15, 2003
Elizabeth Chatworth has spent her life protecting herself from men. When she started to grow into her body, her older brother thought it was funny to torture her and bet her virginity while playing games with his friends. For years she had to put up with his abuse when he brought her home from the convent to torture for his amusement. Eventually she learned how to protect herself, with weapons and words. She never lets a man touch her without inflicting pain, nor does she leave herself vunerable to attack by walking in front of a man. Then she meets Miles Montgomery and everything she's believed about men changes.

Miles is astounded when he is delievered this golden goddess stark naked in a rug. He is even more startled by her obvious hatred of him as a man. He could understand why she wouldn't like him as a Montgomery, as their families are involved in a blood feud, but that she would be repulsed by him as a man confuses Miles to no end. He soon learns that underneath her hatred lies fear and he decides that he will go to whatever lengths to conquer her of that fear. What he didn't plan on was falling for her himself.

The story of Elizabeth and Miles is breathtaking. Elizabeth learns to overcome her fear with Miles' help. In Scotland she overcomes her fear of all men and is very grateful to Miles to unapologetically takes advantage of that fact. The only problem they have is their feuding families, which comes to be resolved nicely at the end. Deveraux brings back all the characters from the Velvet series for a very satisfying ending!

Happy reading!

4.0 out of 5 stars Terrific story. I want to read the rest of the series., February 8, 2006

Alyce In Wonderland "The Looking Glass" (Over the hill or underland, or just behind a tree) - See all my reviews
Many reviews have been written detailing this story, so I will make my review short.

I've read Jude Deveraux before, and really enjoy her writing. That prompted me to buy "Velvet Angel." I didn't realize at the time, that it was the finale to a series. The characters were humorous and the story fast- paced from the very first page.

I gave the book 4 stars, instead of five, because a few things annoyed me:

The hero is quick to judge the heroine falsely over something that obviously was not her fault. For that, he banishes her from his life for a while. Luckily, it doesn't take too much of the story to reunite them.

Second, the characters were very typical. He's a powerful warrior who has had hordes of women. She is a sharp- tongued virgin. I still enjoyed reading about them, because they both were quite funny at times.

I will be reading the rest of the series. This one was definitely worth- while.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice conclusion to the Velvet Quarter, November 6, 2005
For years, the Montgomerys and Chatworths have been mortal enemies, a feud introduced to us in VELVET PROMISE. But nobody would have thought that a sick prank would turn out to be the best gift that the youngest brother, Miles Montgomery, could have ever received.

When Elizabeth Chatsworth helped Raine Montgomery's wife escaped the clutches of a sick lord, little did she know that she would find herself taken captive and presented to her enemy Miles Montgomery. But none was more shocked than the receiver himself. Miles couldn't believe his eyes when the carpet unrolls in front of him and out came a naked angel with enough attitude to scare off an entire army.

All her life, Elizabeth has only met men who tried to take advantage of her. Thus she has learned to defend herself and now faced with the enemy, she expects the worse to happen, not the kindness and patience that Miles has shown her from day one. Astounded, she begins to doubt whether what her brother Roger has told her about the Montgomerys was true at all. And the longer she spends time as his "captive", the more she realizes that Miles is different from the kind of men she has known and slowly loses her heart to him.

VELVET ANGEL is a fun-filled story providing a great ending to the Velvet series. It was great to learn more about Miles, a man who loves women so much that he cannot stand to see any woman hurt no matter what their status in life is. I liked seeing his relationship with his children and just how good a father he is to them. Seeing how patient he is with Elizabeth, realizing the anger that she has been carrying due to her unhappy life, is one of the things that just endeared him to me. As for Elizabeth, you will admire her courage and her love for children. They truly are the perfect match for each other.

Filled with entertainment, sensuality and wit, this is a wonderful finish to the saga of the Montgomery brothers. Jude Deveraux proves to us why so many readers have grown to love the Montgomerys. And with the appearance of the couples from the first three books, I guarantee that you will like this and enjoy how the family saga ends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced and hard to put down, July 21, 2006

(VINE VOICE)
Velvet Angel is a beautiful story about Miles and Elizabeth Montgomery. The Chatworth and Montgomery families are involved in a bitter blood feud. Elizabeth Chatworth is captured by an ally of the Montgomery's and presented to Miles Montgomery as a gift. Of course, one look at Elizabeth's beauty was enough for Miles to know that he desired her above all else. But, as all courageous heroines are prone to do, Elizabeth made him work for it. Elizabeth and Miles eventually fall in love but the feud between their families threaten to tear them apart by undermining the fragile trust they have for each other.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was fast-paced and beautifully woven. Not only is it a love story, but also a story about family, trust, and forgiveness.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great ending to series!, July 26, 2005

Justwannaread! (Indianapolis, IN USA) - See all my reviews
I just finished the Velvet series and thought this was the best of the four with charming characters and a great ending. I give out few 5 star ratings, so don't be discouraged by the 4 stars. Miles is totally lovable and its easy to see why women find him so irresistable. He meets his match in Elizabeth and what a challenge she becomes for him! Elizabeth carries a lot of anger and baggage from abuse by her older brother Edmund and a disfunctional family environment. Like Judith, Bronwyn, and Alyx before her, Elizabeth is a strong female heroine with both gifts and weaknesses to her personality. What I enjoyed most about this book was how the whole saga was tied together at the end. Even bad boy, Roger Chatworth, has some redeeming qualities and the reader is glad to see how his part in the story is resolved. Please read the series in order (Velvet Promise, Highland Velvet, Velvet Song, and Velvet Angel) and you will have spent a worthwhile time learning about the amazing Montgomery family.

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE the VELVET SERIES !!!, July 8, 2005

(REAL NAME)
The book wraps up the series so well. I laughed so hard while reading this book. This series is Jude at her best. I believe this is my favorite. I love that the lady's man of the brothers falls in love with a woman that curses like a sailor. LOL The series is a must. I love seeing the sister in laws getting together to save Miles.

Page after page I just got sucked in deeper until I closed the book with a happy sigh. This book had everything you need to create a good romance: a dashing hero, a beautiful feisty heroine, someone who always seems to interfere with the hero and heroine, and, most of all...PASSION! It was written with an amazing level of intensity and feeling that my heart was pumping furiously with the palatable passion in the story. This book is sharp and fast-moving. Filled with Lovable and exciting characters. This was a very entertaining book. This book was a pleasure to read and I couldn't put it down until it was finished. Jude Deveraux has found a perfect match for the notorious Miles Montgomery with feisty Elizabeth Chatworth. They are well matched in temperament, intelligence and in their loyalty to their families. It was an interesting. There is enough conflict to make the story line interesting and not so much that your left wondering why they ever got together.
