3.0 out of 5 stars If you are looking for serious, skip this one.
This should go without saying, but if you are looking for a serious book to read... this isn't it. I did not like this one as much as the first, but it was still a cute, light read. These books aren't high brow reading, the sex scenes aren't really "hot" in my opinion, but they do add to the story, I mean, let's face it. The woman has an sex demon at her disposal...

4.0 out of 5 stars engaging lighthearted urban fantasy, June 7, 2008
This review is from: The Velvet Chair (Mass Market Paperback)
After spending the day insuring gas stations were not gouging customers, Chicago Department of Consumer Service detective Jewel Heiss and her partner former con artist Clay Dawes are going undercover. Joining them is the Randy the sex demon she freed from THE BRASS BED. They are to investigate the claims of the owner of the suddenly very popular the Venus Machine.

The owner claims the velvet chair can make anyone attractive. Jewel assumes they are dealing with a professional con artist. Her flim flam theory is affirmed when the trio soon learns that the Venus Machine is connected to Clay's dad, who mentored his offspring re the art of the con and tied also to another investigation involving a spa. To prove fraud, Jewel sits on the velvet chair, but to her shock something strange and fascinating begins to happen to her.

This is an engaging lighthearted urban fantasy starring an intriguing heroine and her retinue. The story line is fast-paced, but newcomers should read the first Jewel of a tale to better understand how the lead female ended up with two male hunks as "partners". Very creative, sub-genre fans will enjoy the antics of THE VELVET CHAIR.

5.0 out of 5 stars A hoot!, August 14, 2009

I really really enjoyed this book. Jennifer Stevenson is such an intelligent and witty writer, and I love the fact that the heroine, Jewel, has had a checkered past and is not going to apologize for it. The sexy parts of the story are imaginative, innovative and sometimes funny as well; not the usual tab A, slot B stuff some writers trot out time after time. Highly recommended, but read The Brass Bed first (also very rewarding) so that everything will make sense.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Velvet Chair is a fun ride, October 25, 2010
This review is from: The Velvet Chair (Mass Market Paperback)
The Velvet Chair is the second in a trilogy by Jennifer Stevenson set in a magical Chicago. In this one, a bunch of people assemble at a mansion with the idea of looking at a chair that supposedly has magical powers. Some are con artists, some are law enforcement people under cover, and some may be both. It is a lot of fun, and the story takes some great twists. Definitely a good follow-up to the first book, (The Brass Bed), I would read that one first.

I, surprisingly, am really enjoying this serious. It's fun, lighthearted and easy to read when things are super crazy and stressful and you need something you can enjoy without thinking too much about it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lousy read, June 9, 2008
This review is from: The Velvet Chair (Mass Market Paperback)
I grabbed this to take on vacation and never could finish it. What storyline? Was it suppose to be soft porn? Sex and foul words are the in thing now? I'll stick with Debbie MacComber, et al.
