5.0 out of 5 stars VELVETY SMOOTH, December 8, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Velvet (Audio CD)
"VELVET" is the beautiful smooth ballad & 3rd single from the million selling 'A-ha' comeback album "MINOR EARTH,MAJOR SKY", though not yet released in the U.S. Velvet is slated to be the 1st single released from the album when it comes out in the states in early 2001; as it will be featured in the movie "One Night At McCool's".The single has already been in the top 5 in Germany/the album debuted at #1 and is still on the charts. There are several mixes here, all good but the best ones are DE PHAZZ MIX(a jazzy, classy take w/r & b elements); and NEW YORK CITY MIX(a warm & inviting version which deserves airplay on it's own). Of course the original version(RADIO EDIT or ALBUM VERSION)is probably the very best cut of this beautiful song, but all of them are more or less mellow in keeping with the original. None are 'club' versions. Great song.

5.0 out of 5 stars Esoteric Beauty, April 30, 2001

a-ha's `Velvet' is a whimsical atmospheric piece of sheer beauty. You have to hear it to appreciate this great melodic piece of elegant impressionism. Once again a-ha delivers a work of innovation and inspiration with this heart felt song. The `new york city mix' has a very soothing and tranquil feel to it. There is more than just talent and genius behind a-ha's work. They meld lyric, melody and their unique sound into something that transcends the definition of music. `Velvet' has to be one of their most definitive examples of this quality. I still get a chuckle or a sarcastic laugh when I tell people about a-ha. They refuse to even listen to the music. That is their loss. Yet I still know there are numbers of us out there who appreciate a-ha's artistry and that is a great comfort to me.

I will be the first to admit my ignorance to Aha's work. They were never the trendiest of bands after the 80s. However, how lucky I was to find 2 versions of this track on the One Night at McCools soundtrack. It is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard and I was stunned at the fact it never got any air time on MTV UK or on any of the radio stations here. The haunting music made my hairs stand on end. Absolutely beautiful. I would recomend it to everybody!

I just can not understand how a song like Velvet can be overlooked? It is utter beauty! The mixes on this disc will give you everything you need to enjoy for years to come. I first heard Minor Earth a year ago and it has not bored me yet. I must have listened to Velvet 500 times so far and it sends chills down my spine everytime.

This song also appears on the soundtrack to "One Night at McCool's". Originally recorded by side-project Savoy.
