5.0 out of 5 stars Just when I was about to give up on new music...
this cd is absolutely wonderful. you have a true gift. a sense of music and lyric that creates synergy. not common nowadays. it will sit comfortably and rightfully in my collection next to kate bush, tori amos, sarah mclachlan and sheryl crow, and it will not pale in the least by comparison. it was magic from the first time i heard it. i'm going to play the hell out of...

3.0 out of 5 stars Ms. York is alright...
her music started off as balladic, but then became something like a Poe lite. It wasn't bad, but it also wasn't, for me, memorable.

My wife liked it a lot, though. She'll probably write in also and give the CD a higher rating.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wicked little high....., April 22, 2005
This review is from: The Velvet Hour (Audio CD)
Bringing on the groove-mood and winding down the tension. Wow, I really didn't know what to expect from the cover of this cd, but the sultry body-swaying rhythm and lyrics were like a glass of smooth wine to my soul. If you haven't checked this out already you should. One of my favorites is "Open Wider."

5.0 out of 5 stars Must-hear cd by a Must-see vocalist, September 23, 2003
This review is from: The Velvet Hour (Audio CD)
Wow. I love this cd. How does she do it? She's a regular on The West Wing (as Toby's heartbreaker ex-wife) and she's writing these amazing songs in her spare time? This album is a powerful collection of lyrics delivered by a fabulous sultry voice. The music is rich and haunting throughout. This cd has just the right balance between attentive production and raw performance. I especially like 'Open Wider' for it's honest, powerful lyrics and 'Have no fear' for it's pure vocal interpretation. I loved this cd so much I just didn't want it to end, just like when I'm reading a great book that I hate to put down. Buy it and you won't be sorry!

5.0 out of 5 stars A hypnotic journey, September 24, 2003

The Velvet Hour takes you on a hypnotic journey using fascinating music arrangements and smooth vocal stylings that tantalize and seduce. From the very first track "Haunting You", the listener is enveloped by the melody and sheer grace of such a stellar performer. From the heartbreaking sorrow of "Save Me" to the cool self-reproach of "Wicked Little High", The Velvet Hour seems almost like a guilty pleasure, to be rellished and savoured.
Allow the slow groove to take over and let the lyrics feed your imagination. Do not miss out on this album.

To give this one star is almost criminal!!
The music stands by itself. It doesn't have to be compared to anyone. She must be doing something right to have sung to millions at the Academy Awards

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have!!, January 4, 2006
This review is from: The Velvet Hour (Audio CD)
I'm blown away by her music. Her voice is angelic--soft and sultry yet raw and powerful--and her phrasing unlike anything heard before. I can play her songs over and over (and over) and they never become old because of Bird's unique phrasing--along with unusually terrific song stylings. On top of all that, the lyrics are haunting and soul stirring. I've turned all my friends on to The Velvet Hour and know Bird is destined become a popular star in no time.

Well worth the investment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sexier, smarter, so much better than Dido and Norah., May 14, 2004

If you like warm, seductive female vocals, smart, sexy lyrics, and smooth trip-hop grooves, you will love Bird York's The Velvet Hour. From beginning to end, this CD draws you in and goes straight to your heart and soul, leaving you wanting more, or just wanting to play it all again. She produced this independently which can be the only reason for why not many have heard of her yet. Bird's first cd landed her as "one of the top ten emerging artists" by the music editors of Amazon.com. This second cd proves them right. Buy it, then discover more about this very cool artist on her website www.birdyork.com.

5.0 out of 5 stars So many "flavors" of "mellow"!, May 27, 2004
By
This review is from: The Velvet Hour (Audio CD)
Unlike other reviewers, I cannot fathom playing this CD at my place of employment - there's no one there I like that much! I can however imagine it filling my space as I'm driving down the Interstate to a "special" set of arms - or in front of a fire on a cold night....or a lazy, rainy Sunday morning. If you're lucky enough to have experienced a "secret moment" in life - you might have a hard time concealing the smirk on your face when you listen to "Wicked Little High"! Sultry, seductive, mellow - if you like "Enya", you'll love Bird York........she's Enya - with a shot of Tabasco - this artist is in a class all her own; she'll be "going places"! "Five Stars" aren't enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Elegant, smart, poignant: Velvet Hour wears well, May 20, 2004

I love this CD. It's my favorite for long drives at night and excellent company at work in the afternoon. Velvet Hour is a sultry visit to a world full of vision and aching beauty. Bird York has a directness and passion that soars through high clear notes. True to the title, her sexy lower resister whispers in your ear and never fails to tell a story. I think Save Me is an undiscovered classic. Open Wide with it's wonderful, memorable images is an even stronger rendition than the first time out on her earlier CD. Kudos to excellent backup musicians and orchestration.
