The mystery is well plotted with plenty of suspects, red herrings, and twists and turns.

I love these cozy mysteries because they are so easy to read at the end of a hard day.

Wow... These books are just great! This is not the first in the series, so If you haven't already read the others I suggest you read them first. The characters in these books are funny and entertaining. They have great chemistry that makes reading about their lives really fun. Suspenseful and funny all in one book. A great read!

Jenn McKinlay's "Cupcake Bakery" series is one of the most funny and interesting series currently available in the cozy genre. I especially loved "Red Velvet" revenge because it captures the spirit of the old west in a storyline that extends beyond the Valley of the Sun and up into the Arizona foothills for a spectacular rodeo chock full of family drama.

In "Red Velvet Revenge," Mel and Angie are faced with a slump at the bakery. The summer heat has driven tourists and locals inside and the foot traffic in Old Town Scottsdale, where the bakery is located, is almost non-existent. When Oz, their trusty assistant shows up with an old ice cream truck, he hopes to turn into a mobile version of Fairytale Cupcakes, Mel and Angie are a bit skeptical, but decide to move forward, if only to better compete with their archival, Olivia. As they are taking a test drive, the truck breaks down and they are rescued by the owners and organizers of one of Arizona's largest rodeo events - Slim and Tammy Hazard. They are soon hired to come up to Juniper Pass, a bucolic location in the Arizona Foothills, to sell cupcakes during the annual rodeo. With business slow, they jump at the opportunity and head north, once the truck is repaired and prepped for mobile bakery use, with Oz, Marty (their other assistant) and business partner Tate in tow.

All is not fun and games at the rodeo, and soon they are dealing with the attempted murder of Slim, the shenanigans of his daughter Shelby, who is out to wreck the festivities due to her so-called "social consciousness," and a rodeo start, Ty Stokes, whose huge ego could spell the end of the rodeo as everyone knows it.

#55 Book Read in 2012
Red Velvet Revenge by Jenn McKinlay

This book is the fourth installment in one of my favorite cozy mystery series. In this book, Mel and Angie decide to bring their cupcake van to a rodeo to sell their cupcakes. As always when they are involved, there is drama at the rodeo and someone turns up dead. Mel begins to investigate the death and of course gets herself in trouble. Along with the murder mystery, the romance of Mel and Joe moves forward. Angie and Tate's unspoken love for each other moves forward in its own way as well. Along for the ride are Oz and Marty.

I enjoy this series. The characters are interesting and I love how they all care for each other. There is a good balance between mystery and romance, with humor thrown in for good measure. I did miss Captain Jack's antics in this book. Hopefully in the next one, he gets more page time.

I highly recommend this series.

The summer may be heating up, but sales are cooling off at Fairy Tale Cupcakes and owners Melanie Cooper and Angie DeLaura will do anything to beef up sales so they jump at the offer to sell cupcakes at the annual Juniper Pass Rodeo. Unfortunately, their time in Juniper Pass will be anything but calm as one person is shot and another person murdered. Soon Mel and Angie find themselves involved in yet another murder case and working hard not only to save their business but to catch a killer.

"Red Velvet Revenge" is the sweetly done forth book in Jan McKinlay's Cupcake Bakery cozy mystery series. I love this series especially the characters - Mel, Angie, Tate, Marty, Oz, even their over-the-top battles with Olivia Plunkett. Each of these characters (okay maybe not Olivia) have grown throughout the course of the four books and I'm glad McKinlay isn't letting the Angie/Roach/Tate storyline dragged on too long. While the cupcake bakery setting is a good one, it was a nice touch to see the characters away from that familiar setting and the rodeo setting is a nice one - I felt like I was there taking in all the action while reading the book. I literally dreamt of cake pops halfway through reading the book! The mystery is well plotted with plenty of suspects, red herrings, and twists and turns. This is one of those rare cozy mysteries where I actually felt sympathetic towards the killer and wanted to know more about what happened to said killer in the future.

"Red Velvet Revenge" is a delightful cozy mystery and I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

Jenn McKinlay is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. This book only reinforced that. It was a page turner from the beginning and my only disappointment in the book was that it had to end. I loved it...simply loved it. I was so happy to see some movement in the Tate/Angie/Roach story and the ending left me dying to read the next one already! I did spend the entire book craving cupcakes and cake pops. The settings are created just perfectly...descriptive enough so that you feel like you are there but not so much that it gets in the way of the story and becomes filler. The plot flowed perfectly and I was kept guessing right until the end as to the identity of the culprit. This is a must read.
