Man's Got Chops,
By
This review is from: Velvet Rut (Audio CD)
"The Velvet Rut" is a brilliant album which displays the creativity and incredible instrumental blues finger-picking of Paul Curreri. There certainly isn't a song on the record which could be described as 'simple' or poorly- constructed; the beauty of his song-writing is the honesty and wit in his lyrics coupled with the fact that he is very much 'doing his own thing.' He is a wonderful wordsmith and I would highly recommend this album to anyone who is looking for some clever & beautiful music.

Banging on a Box,
By Lee Armstrong (Winterville, NC United States) - See all my reviews (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Velvet Rut (Audio CD)
"The Velvet Rut" starts with a talked lyric on "Mantra." The title tracks follows, an instrumental with various stringed instruments strummed. "The Wasp" has percussion that sounds like someone banging on a box. "The Ugly Angel" & "Keep Your Master's Voice in Your Mouth" have witty lyrics but no memorable melodies. "Intermission for Beer" & "Don't Drink" are simple instrumentals. Lyrically, Curreri writes conversationally with wit, but sometimes it's not so witty, "You're overseas; I'm hoping you're safe & I'm home." Melodically, he needs to take some workshops because these tunes are mechanical. As a vocalist, he's got a pleasant voice that can go sharp at awkward moments. Unfortunately, "The Velvet Rut" doesn't offer anything memorable. Nice try.
