This is by far the best reissue of the year, perhaps of all time. Truly glorious packaging: a weighty coffee-table-sized book, magnificently illustrated and penned by Velvet Underground authority, Richie Unterberger (although there are more photographs than words). Obviously made for profit, but also a labor of love.

Disc One: An incredibly-clear remastering, better than any that have gone before, the equal of the long out-of-print MFSL version. Finishes with bonus tracks: the familiar single-voice All Tomorrow's Parties and a previously unheard instrumental backing-track of the same. Also has alternate versions of European Son and Herion, and a great alternate mix of I'll Be Your Mirror with Nico's laughter at the end.

Disc Two: As with disc one, the best-sounding mono version yet with the two mono singles as bonuses. This is the way the album was originally recorded, so this is the definitive version. Thunderous.

Disc Three: Chelsea Girl, put here because on Nico's firt solo album, she was backed by Reed, Cale, Morrison and Jackson Browne. They wrote the majority of the songs too. Kind of like a gentle version of VU&N, but unfortunately, originally ruined with spurious and later added bogus strings and a flute, which could not be removed here because they could not find the original master, but yet again, the best sounding version yet.

Disc Four: The Scepter Studio version. Never mind the bootlegs; here the sound improvement is very dramatic, now elevated to nearly the same sound quality as the official mono version. Please note there a couple of seconds of pop and click during Run Run Run. Maureen Tucker's one of only two existing acetate records served as the main source for these.

When the recent DELUXE and SUPER DELUXE versions of 'THE VELVET UNDERGROUND AND NICO' and 'WHITE LIGHT/WHITE HEAT' were first announced I was fairly disgusted with the price of the SUPER DELUXE EDITIONS. Here's a rundown of their contents, and at the end we'll discuss their value for money and cheaper options. Let's begin with the new releases of their first iconic album.......

I already owned the first THE VELVET UNDERGROUND AND NICO Deluxe Edition from 2002 featuring the album's stereo and (superior) mono versions, the five most VELVET-like tracks from NICO's 'CHELSEA GIRL" and mono versions of the singles "All Tomorrow's Parties"/"I'll Be Your Mirror" and "Sunday Morning"/"Femme Fatale." The first pressing (which I have) also had the "peelable" banana. The 2012 45th ANNIVERSARY version's first disc contains a REMIXED version of the stereo album, four alternate takes ("All Tomorrows Parties," "Heroin," "European Son" and "I'll Be Your Mirror") and an instrumental take of "All Tomorrow's Parties." The second disc has the oft-bootleged "Scepter Studio Sessions," with nine of the album's eleven songs recorded before the Verve album, and six "Factory Rehearsals" recorded on January 3, 1966 that contain the rarities "Walk Alone," "Crackin' Up" and "Miss Joanie Lee.".....

This six disc SUPER DELUXE 45th Anniversary LIMITED EDITION of THE VELVET UNDERGROUND & NICO comes in a 10" x 11" hardcover book with the de rigeur peelable banana. The first disc is the same as disc one of the 2012 DELUXE EDITION, Disc Two is the same as Disc 2 of the 2002 DELUXE EDITION.

3.0 out of 5 stars For completists only January 21, 2013
Format:Audio CD
Unless you have to have everything by The Velvets this is really too much. You've heard the songs before, the Nico album is okay, the live stuff is poorly recorded (on a par with the Quine tapes), the outtakes are of marginal interest and the notes add nothing that you don't already know. "Peel Slowly And See" is all you really need. Save your money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive VU May 3, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
One of the most important and influential albums of the 20th century has finally gotten the treatment it deserves. We have had the stereo version forever, and the mono version has been out for a few years, but now we finally have the Dolph Spectre sessions. And what's more, about half those sessions are sourced from tape, rather than that acetate some dude bought at an auction and tried to sell to Polygram. (The others are from acetate, probably that one), but all to say the sound quality is much better than what has been on the internet. It is exciting to hear Lou sing "Heroin" from the Spectre sessions with the opening line "I know just where I'm going" instead of "I don't know just where I'm going." It changes the whole meaning of the song, making it even more harrowing.

The packaging is beautiful, but I don't fall for pretty packages. If you don't have to pay too much, this is a must-have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, if overstuffed. January 3, 2014
Format:Audio CD
The first two and a half discs are material we've largely heard before, abiet remastered from the previously released "Deluxe Edition; Everything on disc one is duplicated from "The Deluxe Edition". The only track on the 2nd CD that *may* be different is the "I'll Be Your Mirror". On disc three there are five Nico/Cale/Reed tracks from "Chelsea Girls" and "The Marble Index" that are not found on "The Deluxe Edition". If you don't have these Nico CDs already, you really want to get them here. Disc four is the fabulous Scepter Studios disc, one copy of which was found in a used record bin by a collecter in NYC for a couple of bucks-- the only other known copy was found in VU Drummer Mo Tucker's private collection, and that's the copy that's used here, it's sound is quite superior to the other copy. The last two CDs chronicle the long bootlegged Melody Laughter (Live At Valleydale Ballroom, Columbus, Ohio / 1966) and bring it up to a much more listenable experience.

The best album from the greatest group of all time. Lots of cool additions to this package. I love the full gymnasium set and of course the rehearsal of the lost tune Jenny Lee.
