Editorial Reviews

Joo Young-soo is a well-respected minister and a loving family man with a beautiful wife and daughter. One day, his picture perfect life is shattered to pieces when his five-year old daughter, Hye-rin, is kidnapped. The minister and his wife cling onto God with desperate prayers but she never returns. Feeling betrayed and distraught with anguish, Joo renounces his faith and turns to a completely secular life. Eight years pass and he has become a corrupt businessman who laughs at his estranged wife for not giving up hope on their daughter.

Joo Young-Soo (Kim Myung-min), a father and a pastor, is currently negotiating with his daughter's kidnapper. When the kidnapper notices the police presence, he cancels the deal and disappears with Young-Soo's daughter. 8 years later, Young-Soo has given up his life as a pastor as well as his beliefs, while his wife continues searching for their lost daughter. Eventually, his daughter and her kidnapper reemerge, and Young-Soo plans on saving his daughter... without the police.

The story in this film is great. It's not completely original - but it manages to entertain immensely, despite that fact. Much of the movie plays out as a game of cat and mouse between Young-Soo and the kidnapper. Throughout the story, Young-Soo goes through hell to save his daughter - making heartbreaking choices and fighting through the physical and emotional pain. The ending of the film is bittersweet, definitely makes you look back at this journey. However, there are a few scenes in the film that make you question the characters' actions, this is usually regarding the minor side characters, though; simply things like running away from a car by running down the middle of the road when you had the opportunity to take that same car and escape or run off the road where a car will have trouble driving. The acting in the film is fantastic. Kim Myung-min does a great job as his character changes over time and you can see the emotion within; Uhm Ki-joon plays a sinister villain, and he plays it well. The music is also great, really created a serious, dark tone. The editing and direction are also smooth. The pacing was fast.

I own the Blu-ray version of this film. The picture and sound quality are great. There are no special features, unfortunately.
