Book Description

What if you gave up everything you knew and loved for a lie?

Nearly one year ago, Celaine Stevens made the choice to leave her life behind to join The Epicenter, an organization charged with bringing down The Man in Black - a terrorist and the one responsible for the murder of her entire family. Battling conflicting emotions and the pain her decision caused, Celaine tells herself that her sacrifices will all have been worth it when The Man in Black is finally apprehended.

But, instead of hunting the elusive entity, Celaine and her partner Ian Grant find themselves preparing for a war looming on the horizon. Angered by President Brooks' ever-tightening restrictions, a rebellion has formed, leading the charge against the President and anyone who stands in their way. Caught in the middle, Celaine and Ian are forced to choose sides, having to decide whether to align themselves with the rebellion, whose motives they question, or obey the orders given to them by an organization they are steadily growing to distrust.

A war is sparked by deceit, new alliances are formed, an unexpected love begins to blossom, and true identities are revealed in Vendetta Nation, the second installment of the Enigma Black trilogy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning and Suspenseful November 19, 2013
By Justine
Format:Kindle Edition
I'm not sure if you have read Enigma Black - although I really suggest you do - but it is an excellent book. I didn't believe that Vendetta Nation would be able to top that first novel. But it did, or in the least, came extremely close to doing so. This second book in the series is absolutely breathtaking, filled with suspense and action.
The excellent plot of Enigma Black continues throughout this novel. The unique idea of the superheroes comes back into play. I still love the idea of generally ordinary people really becoming extraordinary. It's always harder to connect with a character that is born into greatness. In addition, the science behind the superheroes, although not explained with excruciating detail, is explained in enough that the reader can believe in the possibility.

Celaine continues to be a great protagonist. She's strong, determined, and constantly stands up for what she believes in. She can be killer, but also has a great empathy. For me, it was really easy to empathize with her, allowing me to further dive into the story and completely submerge myself in the world. Although while reading Enigma Black, I didn't want to let in a new superhero partner, Ian has completely won me over. Not only is he a great character, but he had some lines in which I actually had to stop reading and swoon a little bit. Contrasting completely, one of my favorite characters to read about is Victor. He might not be the most likable character, but he is such a round character with a whole lot of back story and surprise. Plus, I've really respect a good villain.

Vendetta Nation has a ton of twists and turns that kept me engrossed in the novel the entire time. I'm not always the best at predictions, but I'm usually not bad. Still, some of these I just didn't see coming.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-written amazingly unique sequel! June 5, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
"Sometimes chaos can masquerade as peace..."

"...the more people fear, the more they hide. And the more they hide, the less they fight back."

Those are just two of the amazing quotes found in this wonderful book.

I loved the first in this series, Enigma Black, but this one was so much more.

Some of the little tidbits in the story reminded me of classic dystopians, in that it made me question and compare things to the present world. I found myself saying, "This is frighteningly close to a possible future for us." It was fantastic. In my opinion that is what makes a great dystopian story--the ability to make the reader see it as a possible future. I love a good sci-fi, but when you read a story that makes you feel like our world could fall into the one portrayed in the book, that is a great dystopian. And Vendetta Nation did just that.

What I really appreciated was that Sara had the ability to combine a bit of love to the amazing world she created. The story is full of action and suspense, but there is still heart in it when you watch the relationship move between the two heroes. I liked watching Celaine and Ian both come to an understanding in themselves and who they were despite the circumstances they were thrown into.

It was interesting to watch Celaine grow as a character. She was once a person focused solely on vengeance, but it seems as her relationship develops with Ian she has more purpose. Instead of focusing on what she once had and could have had, she is realizing she has a purpose in all of this. I can't wait until the next book to see what happens as the story evolves even further.

Great sequel and I highly recommend this series.

I am more than thrilled to report that Sara Furlong-Burr's second book of the Enigma Black Trilogy, Vendetta Nation, did not disappoint. As we learn more about the evils that are a part of this nation, and learn more about the characters involved, she continues to suck in her readers. I was hooked from the first page, and by the time I reached the Epilogue, I am now on the edge of my seat waiting for the final installment of this trilogy to be released in 2014! Here's to hoping that it's early-2014 so I don't have to wait too long!

5.0 out of 5 stars Book 2 in the Enigma Black trilogy October 19, 2013

I've been waiting on pins and needles for the this book after finishing the first, and it was definitely worth the wait! The storyline is just as compelling, and the characters so well-written, you can't help but love or hate them. Celaine and Ian's fight against the Man in Black continues but not-so-new foes take a big step forward in the plot of this story, which I can only imagine will lead to an epic clash in book 3. Relationships are changing at the same time, and I find myself unable to pick a side because I love all the characters involved, so I can't wait to find out how it all ends!

5.0 out of 5 stars Vendetta Nation February 5, 2014

After finishing Enigma Black, I needed to start this second book right away. It does not disappoint - suspense, love, and a start to wrapping up the story line. It's great! And, the only reason I'm disappointed is because I have to wait for the last book.

Author Sara Furlong-Burr is at it again! Following on the heels of Enigma Black, Furlong-Burr's second outing, Vendetta Nation, continues the story of revenge, heartbreak and tyranny. Returning to the lineup are mainstays Celaine Stevens, Chase Matthews, Victor, President Brooks, and a creaky Man in Black that has still found the energy to destroy a few lives here and there. Fairly fresh to the game are Ian Grant and Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Rebellion leader Marshall Leitner, who tackle more significant roles as the plot evolves from a heart-wrenching coming-of-age story into a compact yet crisp political thriller. Enigma wasn't plodding by any means, but with its successor clocking in at thirty three pages less given the spotlight directed toward additional characters and the amount of content covered, it's quite a remarkable feat. What's also impressive is the balance shown in Vendetta. Tension (literally in every chapter) engulfs the atmosphere like a tsunami would a birdhouse; relationships, power, and the privilege to hit up the old drinking hole after dark are at stake! That said, all of this grimness is neatly stabilized by Celaine and Ian's sarcastic banter, Cameron's boisterous Sherminatorism (a reference for all you American Pie fans), and Kara's sisterly doting (Note: not Celaine's actual sister). Also worth noting is the author's good sense in shedding just the right amount of light onto secondary characters without having to delve too deep into unnecessary origin stories. Leitner's narrative is an interesting one to follow, and it's undoubtedly true that the introductory Thomas Jefferson quote: "All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent." was meant to foreshadow a battle royale for freedom against the Brooks Empire....I mean Administration. More About the Author

Sara "Furlong" Burr was born on February 1, 1982, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. At an early age, when it became apparent she wouldn't have the luxury of skating through life on her looks or athletic prowess, Sara found her true passion in writing. While in fifth grade, she wrote her first "novel"(whose name escapes her at the moment) about five friends who win a trip to Hawaii. At ninety-something pages, it was her crowning achievement during her childhood (you may now begin drawing your own conclusions on how sad a childhood Sara actually had).

After focusing much of her adult life on her family and career as a paralegal, Sara found the voices in her head becoming unrelenting and she returned to her true passion. Currently, she's working on the sequel to Enigma Black entitled Vendetta Nation. She's also tossing around ideas for a chick-lit book about two ill-fated lovers (Lord, help her).

When she's not writing, Sara enjoys reading (pretty much a given), attempting to garden, shopping (prerequisite to being a woman), and spending time with her family and friends who somehow manage to tolerate her numerous disappearances propagated by infrequent bouts of inspiration.
