In this sequel to The Fetch (2006), 15-year-old Sky March is off to Corsica to figure out how to evict his evil Norwegian grandfather, Sigurd, who is possessing his beloved cousin Kristin. Seeking help from the Corsican branch of his family, Sky runs into the Mazzeri, the Dream Hunters, who leave their bodies to hunt—the Corsican equivalent to the Norse "Fetch" magic practiced by Sky. Schooled in Mazzeri secrets by his mysterious aunt, Sky travels back in time to 1583 and merges with 14-year-old Tza, an ancestress. Sky carves a new set of runestones with Tza's stone blade, works to end the vendetta, and seeks a method to free Kristin. Humphreys' interweaving of Corsican legends and rune lore is fascinating, but the pacing in the novel's second half drags when Sky retreats for a year into a cave.
