I seek this author out, August 20, 2007
This review is from: Vendetta (Silhouette Intimate Moments No. 1297)(Devil's Cove series) (Mass Market Paperback)
Ok. Not great.
Langan writes series. Like any other romance novelist, her sex and relationship scenes are pretty redundant. In her recent writing the patterns are getting more and more obvious. Forceful kissing, then gentle kissing, then desperate premarital sex, then gentle sex. She's using that exact pattern in more than two series' now. In every book mouths get "plundered" and the world "tilts".
Would you really want to have your mouth plundered? Sounds like you might lose a filling.
In her earlier work there was a sense of irony. The characters acted like they were in a romance and went ahead and ripped bodices with the best of them, but there was also a good fast-paced plot. The books were pulps, but they didn't pretend to be anything else, and that was hugely refreshing. Now she's bowing the pressure to add "relationships" and the bodice ripping has taken a back shelf to fairly redundant books about feelings and being hurt but loving anyway. Also, the books are cheapened by the extra characters she inserts so that she can plug out three to four more redundant stories on the same theme.
A girl's got to make a living, right?
Yes, I do seek this author out, but only because she used to not waste time on relationships. I read "Diamond" as a teen and it opened my eyes to the world of romance. Diamond is almost a passable western. It is also a series, though, and I have not had a chance to get to the other books, which I may find to be cheapened like these more recent ones are.
Come on, you're not reading romance for reality. Just great passionate sex. Please Ruth, cut the relationship crap and put buried treasure in Devil's Cove instead. Fantasy Island would have been much better with gold coins.
