Limited two CD edition of the Swedish singer/songwriter's 2005 debut album including a bonus CD that contains seven bonus tracks taken from EPs and B-sides. Armed with just a dexterously plucked Spanish guitar and his own warm but clipped vocals he paints intimate portraits that sound like classics from a golden singer/songwriting yesteryear. Of Argentinean descent, Gonz lez counts Bossa Nova and Joy Division among his influences, and sure enough, stately, quietly expansive songs are equal parts Latin passion and gothic introspection. The lilting 'Stay In The Shade', meanwhile, sounds like a luminous Nick Drake outtake. Avex. 2009.

With all the posers on TV these days, from American Idol to that new "just singing, no instruments" show (I don't even know the name and don't care), it is refreshing to listen to a person with true talent. Jose Gonzalez is an amazing songwriter, singer, and guitarist. Usually I get bored listening to a whole CD of one voice, one instrument, but not this time. Each song is different and beautifully crafted.
Do yourself a favor, turn off the TV and buy this CD. You will not be disappointed.
