Now she's found her niche in writing romantic thrillers that combine intense emotion with action packed plots. The author of six books in The Surgical Strike Unit series about a privately run special operations group, she has set her new series WAR in West Africa, where she lived for a time.

When she's not writing, listening to music, or playing puzzle games on her mobile device, Vanessa writes the occasional Tech Talk column for her local RWA chapter's newsletter and takes long hikes in the nearby hills.

...like the heroine, I really did. She had such promise but she drove me absolutely bonkers. She couldn't make up her mind if she was a warrior or a silly, stupid, ignorant, typical "I know more than the highly trained people" chick. She had training but it was pretty much worthless throughout the whole book. Her "he must die and I must be the one to do it" began to sound pretty dumb when you consider the character was strong when she didn't need to be, weak when she needed to be strong, stupid, stupider, stupidest in so many ways that were NOT necessary. Like the hero said, she not only wasn't ready, it wasn't in her and she was the only one who didn't seem to realize that. BAH. It was unrealistic. Her whole character was unrealistic in so many ways.

But if you know that going into the book, then you can pretty much enjoy the book (smile). It's a great story, especially if you suspend belief in a few areas. The story has great potential and I liked it enough to want to read the next in the series. The story does carry you along so that you want to know what happened. And considering I didn't toss the book across the room and only yelled at the heroine maybe twice, it's a good book.

The idea behind the story is good; however, the fact that the heroine, who is supposed to be a trained rescue person, is so flighty and stupid to keep getting herself into trouble, makes for a monotonous read. I was just ready for the book to be over.

Good writing, but I had a hard time with some of the violence portrayed in this book. I read a lot of romantic suspense but some of the violent scenes were too harsh for me. No matter how many times the lead characters were injured (gunshots, knife wounds), they just kept getting into more fights. Fairly unrealistic. The romance was sparse in this book. I am curious to read Kai's story but not sure I can stomach it.

I could not get into this book. The h was beyond redemption. She is supposed to be graduating from a spec ops program, but has such PTSD that she can barely look at another human being and definitely not male. What branch of the military intelligence machine would ever let someone like that join let alone be an operative BEFORE they graduate. Oh yeah, and send her away with 2 men to catch a family member after her horrific experience. Could not suspend my disbelief enough. Read about half way, skipped to the end for closure (i can't not finish a book or at least know the ending) but could have done without it. Don't think i will be following the series.

Jenna Paterson has sworn vengeance against her own brother Kai. Convinced that he was part of a group that attacked her family and killed everyone but Jenna, her only mission is to find him and make him pay.

Niko Andros spent ten years undercover with a Mexican crime lord. Now the crime lord has his aunt captive and Niko will do what ever it takes to get her free.

Niko and Jenna both are after the same thing for very different reasons. Even though Jenna is phycologically damaged she finds herself attracted to Niko and struggling with her attraction. Niko cares for Jenna but he can not let that distract him from his mission.

This is a decent military romance. BE WARNED it has a very graphic story line about what happened the Jenna and her family. The story line is revisited multiple times during the book. This is a very graphic story and not for the faint of heart. It seemed to go on and on a bit. With them traveling to Russia, Mexico and the US. Everytime you think that they are going to get the bad guy some how he get away again. A part of me want to read Kai story, but not sure I could stomach another violently graphic book like this again so soon. Will have to give it some time.

Vengeance grabbed me quickly and kept me engaged the whole way. I love a sensitive, but tough as nails, alpha hero and Niko, Rafe, and Kai were three of the best I've read in a long time. Think Christine Feehan. Jenna's character was only semi believable, but I believe she believed in herself, which is the important thing.
Buy this book. You won't be sorry you did and hopefully we will see Vanessa Kier on our bookshelves for years to come. I'm off to read Kie's story now. Happy reading...

This was my first book by the author and I read it in a day. I found the author's writing style to be refreshing compared to other military romance novels and I will read the other 2 books in the trilogy. The book is light on the romance side but I felt the relationship realistic given the conditions they were under.

The storyline was true to the title because everyone was out for revenge. The story was action packed from page one. I will admit it that it seem the main characters were under the influence of the "microchip formula" because no matter how many times they were shot, stabbed, knocked unconscious, they all bounced back in a matter of hours so they didn't seem mortal.

My primary issue was the heroine in the story. It just didn't seem believable that Jenna spent two years training to be an operator and was totally useless in the field. I tried to make allowances due to the traumatic events suffered by her and her family but she seemed to be delusional about her actual abilities and in fact was a liability for most of the mission. Thankfully the other characters saved the story for me.
