5.0 out of 5 stars VENGEANCE by George Jonas, January 17, 2011
By
This review is from: Vengeance (Paperback)
First published in 1984, this book received renewed attention in 2005 when it was used as the basis of the film Munich, directed by Steven Spielberg. It's the story of a Mossad assassination team, sent to Europe in the aftermath of the 1972 Munich Olympics with a list of eleven targets, including the Black September leader who Israeli intelligence considered responsible for planning the deaths of eleven Israeli athletes, as related by the team leader, known here as "Avner", to journalist and playwright George Jonas.
As the author points out in the prologue, much of Avner's testimony is uncorroborated, which is not surprising given the nature of the operation and the fact that only two of the team survived.
Is the film close to the book? Not entirely. Many of the film's major plot elements do occur in the book, but a lot of details in the film are made up, while other incidents such as the shooting of three Black September members in a Swiss church are omitted entirely. You really need to read the book if you want to find out what actually happened.
These events have of course been written about elsewhere, but this book is probably unmatched for factual accuracy and the level of detail provided.
