More About the Author

The Army took David Drake from Duke Law School and sent him on a motorized tour of Viet Nam and Cambodia with the 11th Cav, the Blackhorse. He learned new skills, saw interesting sights, and met exotic people who hadn't run fast enough to get away.

Dave returned to become Chapel Hill's Assistant Town Attorney and to try to put his life back together through fiction making sense of his Army experiences.

Dave describes war from where he saw it: the loader's hatch of a tank in Cambodia. His military experience, combined with his formal education in history and Latin, has made him one of the foremost writers of realistic action SF and fantasy. His bestselling Hammer's Slammers series is credited with creating the genre of modern Military SF. He often wishes he had a less interesting background.

Dave lives with his family in rural North Carolina.

Wonderful retelling of the Norse/Tuetonic/Icelandic Myths. The entire series reads well, Drakes wording has interesting twists and clever phrases. Plenty of action and intrigue.

4.0 out of 5 stars Military Sci-Fi, now with Knights in electro armor., December 6, 1998

This review is from: Vengeance (Northworld, No. 2) (Paperback)
Drake has created and continues his Northworld universe. These are very interesting novels of action/combat and Sci-Fi chivalry.

Read Northworld first.

3.0 out of 5 stars Muddled, November 27, 2011
This review is from: Vengeance (Northworld, No. 2) (Paperback)
This novel would more appropriately be considered either a long short story or an outright play. There are three separate lines of action. First, the main character, Hansen, is attempting to lead a group of knights in power armor in a battle against a rival faction. Second, the same main character is attempting to reverse engineer a type of hovercraft to use. Third, the great smith Sparrow has been imprisoned by the King opposing Hansen.

The chapters are extremely brief, mostly about 5 pages. The overall setting is never described, only the "stage" on which the current action takes place. The background of the universe itself is only very roughly thumbnailed. Characters are not fully developed. The main characters have a lot of sex which is rarely described except a rape scene near the end.

The lack of character development and setting make the action less interesting. Hansen leads his knights and followers and some of them die to make the story grittier and realistic, but they were hardly properly introduced to begin with anyway.

The author's last word explains that this is an adaptation of some tales from Norse mythology so if you're an expert in that arena perhaps you'll find this novel a bit easier to follow.
