2.0 out of 5 stars May have been too short to meet its potential February 21, 2012
By Archie
Format:Kindle Edition
This semi-short story had some gripping moments and some interesting themes. Unfortunately, for me anyway, the themes were somewhat two dimensional and the gripping moments sometimes fell flat but that could be due to the novella format as another review stated.

That being said, there was some great prose in this story! Some additional attention to editorial detail couldn't hurt because there were times when I was snapped back to reality right in the midst of great story telling; such as when a pronoun misled me (had to go back a few paragraphs in an action scene just to figure out who pulled the gun on whom). Even in the most polished mega-publishing-house offerings, modern works are suffering from a lack of solid editorial efforts so this isn't necessarily a knock on the author.

All in all, not a bad read. I might be interested in reading another in the series provided the characters and scenarios have room to grow without slowing down the pace (tough order to fill for even the best authors).

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling as the big names January 17, 2012

If you're into grittier authors such as Vince Flynn, Handrich is up your alley. The dialogue is authentic and the pacing was fast enough to keep me awake during a long flight. The author--the first I've heard of him--has a way of humanizing people of various socioeconomic backgrounds and giving them a voice. Although I disagree with some of the themes involved, I was able to empathize with Tyler, a gay teen who is bullied.

The only downsize, as mentioned in previous reviews, is I would like to have the protagonist elaborated on and given some more background information. All in all, a fun, short read which gives insight into how the actions of those in power have an effect on others.

3.0 out of 5 stars Raw Vengeance January 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Sometimes anger results in immediate action. Sometimes it sits, and festers until it boils over. Raw Vengeance, by Josh Handrich, is a novella that introduces us to Rich Fordham, and ambitious young reporter looking for his big break. The streets of Chicago have lost their appeal to him and he knows he has to get abroad if he's going to make his name in the world, but he didn't count on the spiral of anger that he would get caught in as he sought his big story. If he gets the story it could be the on that puts him on the world stage, but one wrong move and he goes from reporting the story to being the story.

Raw Vengeance is a short read with a quick pace that follows Rich Fordham along with a collection of surrounding characters that feed the story itself. I liked the story as it is, but I would have loved it in a longer format so that I could have gotten more involved with the characters instead of getting only a quick feel for who they were. The author introduces a number of characters using well-known archetypes with a splash of color that he introduces to make them something a little different from the standard. If future books in the series are going to be succesful the characters will need more fleshing out, especially Rich, who is the nominal hero of the story.

The pace moves along at a decent page and keeps the reader guessing about exactly what is going on and what is going to happen, which makes the story an enjoyable page turner. However, there are some leaps that come out of left field and left me scratching my head. As nice as it is to be surprised when reading a thriller, it is much more enjoyable when the reader is able to look back and say, "ahhh, I wondered what all of that was about," and this story falls a bit short in that sense. Raw vengeance has a wealth of surprises, but a dearth of suspense.

If you're planning a lazy weekend of reading, then this is a great book to start with.

More About the Author

I always get asked how did I decide to write and where did I come up with my ideas. My simple reply is that I read a lot of thrillers. My small library is filled with all the authors of my genre that I give credit for inspiring me to plunge into the writing world.

My dream is to be up there with the Clancy's, Thor's, and Flynn's. That competitiveness is what drives me. It's why when I did research for Kingdom of Rage, I consulted experts in the fields that I was writing about to ensure I was accurate with the technical details.

I want to entertain the reader and take them to a place where they can escape. I want to illustrate a picture so vivid and intense that they forget about time and where they are.

I was at a Vince Flynn book-signing event several years ago in St. Paul, Minnesota. After shaking his hand and having a short conversation, I convinced myself that I should take up writing. During the drive home, I came up with the character that would become my new best friend. This is when my protagonist Rich Fordham was created.
