Riveting!, July 12, 2011
This review is from: Vengeance (The History Patrol) (Kindle Edition)
I received a complimentary copy of the kindle book. I was intgrigued by the novel description, but a little concerned. A lot of sci-fi books I've read get bogged down explaining too much right off the bat and lose me as I'm overwhelmed with too many details and not much plot to sink my teeth into. About the time a plot begins to show itself, I don't care about the characters or what happens to them anymore. It makes me a bit hesistant to read a sci-fi novel by a new (to me) author.
That didn't happen with Vengeance. It is necessary for sci-fi novels to explain a lot in the beginning. However, the way it was done with this novel was wonderful. About the time I normally would have begun to chafe at the details, the story began to unfold. More important details followed, as they must, but at the same time I was learning about the characters and liking them. The riveting ride had begun, and I simply did not want to put this kindle book down. Halfway into this book, I had some fun committments that kept me from having time to read for 24 hours. Despite the fun I was having, I also felt regret, thinking of my kindle on the living room coffee table, Vengeance queued and ready to read, and I wasn't there to read it! It's been a long time since I read a sc-fi novel that had me so anxious to read what was on the next page.
Btw, let me mention I'm a page-skipper. I honestly can't remember the last time I read a book where I didn't skip a few pages when the author got a little wordy. I did not skip a single page, not even a paragraph of this book!
I laughed. I cried. I angsted. My heart broke for the characters. For me, a 5-star book is one where I didn't see the ending coming halfway through the book. With this novel, I didn't see it until I read it, and it all made perfect sense.
I have to comment on this. After finishing the book, I read that it is apparently classified as a "paranormal romance". The "romance" shocked me. Yes, there was definitely a romantic vital element going on here, but I didn't find it overwhelming. Thankfully the heroine didn't turn into a simpering crybaby at any point, which is all too often the case in some romances. It was incredibly believable. I could see myself as Lucinda. I could understand Nico and his actions. It was very well done, not overplayed.
Simply put, I greatly enjoyed the action-packed ride that was Vengeance. I want more! I will be looking for more from this author.

A really good and exciting book, October 2, 2011
This review is from: Vengeance (The History Patrol) (Kindle Edition)
First, I received a copy of this book to write a review about it. I was not encouraged to say positive things.
J L Wilson's Vengeance is a fast-paced thriller. It is about timetravel, reincarnation, telepathy and true love that lasts over one life time. I don't want to give too much away, so I guess I'll just tell you what I liked and didn't like.
Positive things:
- The story is pretty exciting and quite mysterious. I wanted to find out the truth, just like Nico, tHe main character, but I also couldn't wait for what happens next.
- The characters were described good and seemed very real. After a few pages I grew fond of the main characters and I hope there will be a sequel.
- I loved how the author managed to bring some funny sequences into the actually very serious story.
- I loved the dog.
Negative things:
- I found it a bit odd, that the whole setting (time travel, telepathic powers, etc) is explained in the beginning of the book. Also, the explanation "God did this" was a little weak for me. No matter if you are a faithful person or not, it's not quite satisfying. It took a lot of mystery away from the book. I guess it would have been more fun to discover all the things while reading.
- Nico, the main character is really emotional, which I found a bit unrealistic. Not that I think men don't have emotions, but they usually have a hard time expressing them the way he does.
On the other hand, that is probably the way you act when you find the love of a privious life after 200 years.
- Although I found the characters quite real, I must say that Cara seemed to me like a flat stereotype (heartless business-bitch) and that the main antagonist, Meyer didn't really have a motivation to be so evil. At least I didn't see his motivation.
- Sadly, the "How-to" of time travelling is not explained. It is just possible. I recommend this book for readers who like romance in an interesting futuristic setting. Also people who like animals, especially dogs and maybe have a pet themselves, will like this book.
I'm also pretty excited that there will be more novel about the History Patrol.

Vengeance, September 25, 2011
This review is from: Vengeance (The History Patrol) (Kindle Edition)
I am very thankful for receiving a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for my review. I really enjoyed this book; it is one of those books worth re-reading. I loved the premise of the story and loved the main characters, as I know they will stay with me for quite awhile. As I was reading, I kept anticipating what I thought was about to happen, only to be surprised. It was not predictable and had such a beautiful ending . . . totally unexpected, but still beautiful. I loved that the author chose to highlight that special love where perfection is in the eyes of the beholder. After reading it, I saw it was labeled "paranormal romance". I would tend to disagree as most of those defined as "romance" novels tend to get too detailed in the physical versus emotional connections between people. I don't care to read "romance" novels, so glad I didn't see that until I finished the book. The author wrote very eloquently on each of the characters, that it was easy to see and feel them. It was very well written and the kind of book you don't want to put down. I loved Cerberus! I am always looking for new authors, and happy to say that I will be looking for more books written by J L Wilson. Excellent Read!!
