Riveting!,
By
This review is from: Vengeance (The History Patrol) (Kindle Edition)
I received a complimentary copy of the kindle book. I was intgrigued by the novel description, but a little concerned. A lot of sci-fi books I've read get bogged down explaining too much right off the bat and lose me as I'm overwhelmed with too many details and not much plot to sink my teeth into. About the time a plot begins to show itself, I don't care about the characters or what happens to them anymore. It makes me a bit hesistant to read a sci-fi novel by a new (to me) author.
That didn't happen with Vengeance. It is necessary for sci-fi novels to explain a lot in the beginning. However, the way it was done with this novel was wonderful. About the time I normally would have begun to chafe at the details, the story began to unfold. More important details followed, as they must, but at the same time I was learning about the characters and liking them. The riveting ride had begun, and I simply did not want to put this kindle book down. Halfway into this book, I had some fun committments that kept me from having time to read for 24 hours. Despite the fun I was having, I also felt regret, thinking of my kindle on the living room coffee table, Vengeance queued and ready to read, and I wasn't there to read it! It's been a long time since I read a sc-fi novel that had me so anxious to read what was on the next page. Btw, let me mention I'm a page-skipper. I honestly can't remember the last time I read a book where I didn't skip a few pages when the author got a little wordy. I did not skip a single page, not even a paragraph of this book! I laughed. I cried. I angsted. My heart broke for the characters. For me, a 5-star book is one where I didn't see the ending coming halfway through the book. With this novel, I didn't see it until I read it, and it all made perfect sense. I have to comment on this. After finishing the book, I read that it is apparently classified as a "paranormal romance". The "romance" shocked me. Yes, there was definitely a romantic vital element going on here, but I didn't find it overwhelming. Thankfully the heroine didn't turn into a simpering crybaby at any point, which is all too often the case in some romances. It was incredibly believable. I could see myself as Lucinda. I could understand Nico and his actions. It was very well done, not overplayed. Simply put, I greatly enjoyed the action-packed ride that was Vengeance. I want more! I will be looking for more from this author.

A really good and exciting book,

First, I received a copy of this book to write a review about it. I was not encouraged to say positive things.
J L Wilson's Vengeance is a fast-paced thriller. It is about timetravel, reincarnation, telepathy and true love that lasts over one life time. I don't want to give too much away, so I guess I'll just tell you what I liked and didn't like. Positive things: - The story is pretty exciting and quite mysterious. I wanted to find out the truth, just like Nico, tHe main character, but I also couldn't wait for what happens next. - The characters were described good and seemed very real. After a few pages I grew fond of the main characters and I hope there will be a sequel. - I loved how the author managed to bring some funny sequences into the actually very serious story. - I loved the dog. Negative things: - I found it a bit odd, that the whole setting (time travel, telepathic powers, etc) is explained in the beginning of the book. Also, the explanation "God did this" was a little weak for me. No matter if you are a faithful person or not, it's not quite satisfying. It took a lot of mystery away from the book. I guess it would have been more fun to discover all the things while reading. - Nico, the main character is really emotional, which I found a bit unrealistic. Not that I think men don't have emotions, but they usually have a hard time expressing them the way he does.
On the other hand, that is probably the way you act when you find the love of a privious life after 200 years.
- Although I found the characters quite real, I must say that Cara seemed to me like a flat stereotype (heartless business-bitch) and that the main antagonist, Meyer didn't really have a motivation to be so evil. At least I didn't see his motivation. - Sadly, the "How-to" of time travelling is not explained. It is just possible. I recommend this book for readers who like romance in an interesting futuristic setting. Also people who like animals, especially dogs and maybe have a pet themselves, will like this book. I'm also pretty excited that there will be more novel about the History Patrol.

Vengeance,
This review is from: Vengeance (The History Patrol) (Kindle Edition)
I am very thankful for receiving a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for my review. I really enjoyed this book; it is one of those books worth re-reading. I loved the premise of the story and loved the main characters, as I know they will stay with me for quite awhile. As I was reading, I kept anticipating what I thought was about to happen, only to be surprised. It was not predictable and had such a beautiful ending . . . totally unexpected, but still beautiful. I loved that the author chose to highlight that special love where perfection is in the eyes of the beholder. After reading it, I saw it was labeled "paranormal romance". I would tend to disagree as most of those defined as "romance" novels tend to get too detailed in the physical versus emotional connections between people. I don't care to read "romance" novels, so glad I didn't see that until I finished the book. The author wrote very eloquently on each of the characters, that it was easy to see and feel them. It was very well written and the kind of book you don't want to put down. I loved Cerberus!I am always looking for new authors, and happy to say that I will be looking for more books written by J L Wilson. Excellent Read!!

When I received a complimentary copy of this book for review I read the the excerpt I wasn't sure if I was going to like this certain kind of time travel novel but as I started to read it I couldn't put the story down. The story kept me guessing on who was behind everything I would think I had it figured out and then something else would happen to change my mind. I would suggest this story to anyone who likes some suspense and romance.

Souls and soulmates with an element of Time Travel,
By Cheryl M-M (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Vengeance (The History Patrol) (Kindle Edition)
There is a prologue, which explains the premise of the book and the part about the Companion and Guide past lovers forgiveness/redemption was helpful, however I just found it confusing. No matter I thought I will figure it out whilst reading, which I did. I was surprised after the prologue, because the story was very enjoyable. The theme of souls being reborn or soulmates meeting again somewhere in time is interesting in combination with futuristic time travel storyline. Nico has been ordered to kill Lucinda, because according to the powers that be her living would result in some kind of disaster. However he realises that they have a connection, she is someone he has met before. I enjoyed the fact that the Companions can talk via telepathy to the Guides, and also to other animals. This made the book quite funny in some places. The conversation between the dog and other canines was hilarious. I can just imagine animals chatting about us mere humans, as if we were but an object to be controlled. All in all it was a great read. I received a free copy of this book for my review.Vengeance (The History Patrol)

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my review.
For a very complicated storyline the author made it pretty simple to understand. Loved the characters, the chemistry between the dog and Nico. Just enough drama and twists to make it a good page turner. This was a book I really enjoyed reading and I would recommend it.

Decent read; Great dog,
This review is from: Vengeance (The History Patrol) (Kindle Edition)
The best part of Wilson's Vengeance was the dog.
The premise of the book is that a History Patrol (comprised of a person and a "companion" who are the reincarnation of former lovers) goes back in time to bring back people who aren't supposed to be in the past (as in, people who traveled backwards and refused to come home). One of these men loses his companion before realizing that she's his former lover who betrayed him. He's also injected with a serum that results in his relative immortality. Fast forward 200 years, and he's working as an assassin. But he's intrigued by the woman he's supposed to kill. As he examines the situation, more and more things don't seem to add up. He acquires a chatty dog and finds himself in a race to discover the truth and save the life of himself and the people he loves. Wilson developed the sci-fi elements of the novel well - explaining loose ends and bringing everything together in the end. Examining the details too closely still bothers me a bit, but that's because the ending comes together a bit too well and too suddenly. Explaining any more would be giving spoilers, so I'll leave it at that. The love story was pretty good. The concept of betrayed lovers and reincarnation was interesting, though there was no real scene of forgiveness. Sometimes it felt as though Wilson wrote the outline of a scene but forgot to fill it in with the details and emotion. This may be a paranormal romance, but the romance was very subdued. I would recommend Vengeance for any lovers of time travel and paranormal romances. Otherwise, I'd skip it. I received a complimentary copy of Vengeance in return for my review.

Creative and Entertaining,

This review is from: Vengeance (The History Patrol) (Kindle Edition)
With a blend of time travel and reincarnation, this is the most creative and original time travel romance I've read. Author J. L. Wilson (also known as Jayell Wilson) does a great job of keeping a complex plot clear and organized while being entertaining and keeping the story zipping along.
Unfortunately, the ending disappointed me. While Wilson deftly tied up all of the loose ends and answered my lingering questions, I hoped for a fantastically heroic finish and indisputable victory for the good guy. Still, if you are a fan of paranormal time travel romances, you'll enjoy this book. It's definitely not your typical romance novel. I received a complimentary copy of this book in order to review it.

I was given a copy of this book for review. All I can say is that I want a dog like that, and the man wasn't too bad either!
Our hero has a quest to kill a man that's eluded him for two hundred years. He's also supposed to 'bump off' our fiesty heroine in the next few days. Enough conflict to hold my interest. Fast-paced, the novel, didn't disappoint. I think what I enjoyed the most was the dialogue between our hero and the dog he took in. It was quite touching in several scenes, humorous in others, and there was some heat between the two main characters (hero and heroine). I thoroughly enjoyed it. The ending didn't go exactly the way I thought it would go, so that's a plus. I like surprises at the end of books. I need to put all of the History Patrol books on my 'to be read' list. This is the first one I've read, but it won't be the last.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for this review. I'm so glad that I decided to include sci-fi books as an option for reviews! I'm not a big fan of time travel novels, but this one really captivated me and drew me in. I was hooked quickly and drawn to the characters and the smooth writing style of the author.
The story wasn't bogged down with details that weren't too unbelievable or needless. The story line was well thought out, the characters had personality and I enjoyed that a dog was added to the mix. I honestly didn't know how it was going to end, and there were a few twists in the story that I didn't see coming. I was pleasantly surprised, and would definitely recommend this novel! Happy Reading! |
