Metal Survivalists Grow Stronger.,
By A. Estes (Maine) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Of Vengeance & Violence (Audio CD)
Despite the fact that their music hasn't quite found it's audience, despite the fact that they may never quite gain the same level of success as their peers, Dry Kill Logic still press on, doing what they do best. And you have to respect them for it. With their Roadrunner debut, "The Darker Side Of Nonsense," it seemed like the band were destined for bigger things, as that album was a perfect snapshot of nu-metal at the time, taking elements from the likes of Slipknot and Mudvayne. However, things fell apart and when they finally re-emerged in 2004, with "The Dead And Dreaming," they had a more modern sound, fusing what was already established on the debut with the modern metalcore sound. As strong as it was, that album never quite took off either. So it's no surprise that on their third album, "Of Vengeance And Violence," DKL sound comfortable just being themselves and playing good, hard, honest music. They've made it this far, does it really matter what scene they fit into? No.
Sounds Like: A great metal band who refuse to fold. The Good: - Cliff's vocals have improved immensely and his lyrics sound more passionate than ever. - The band seems to have more of an identity now. No longer do they sound like a Hatebreed or Mudvayne cover band. - The music branches out into new territories, delivering some exceptional ballads in the midst of it all. The Bad: - The heavier songs tend to blend with one another too much. - The album doesn't really take off until the second half. Hits: "From Victim to Killer," "Confidence Vs. Consequences," "Lying Through Your Teeth," and the softer songs "Kingdom Of The Blind" and "In Memoria Di." Future: Well, it may not be Dry Kill Logic's big hit, but definitely insures that the guys are going strong. Most bands probably would have given up by this point, but not this one. Personally: The first two DKL albums didn't exactly qualify as classics in my book. This one comes pretty damn close. It's easily the most competent and fully realized album of their career. Best Listened To When: Today's metal gets rusty.

This cd is very good. The singer sounds alot better than on their last release. The intensity level is turned up a little too. There are some ballad stuff on here, but it doesn't slow the album down much at all. The slower stuff is actually quite good. The music is fast, loud, and in your face. The band is very talented and it shows on this recording. I can't say there is a weak song on the whole cd, it is that strong my friends. My favorite track on here is 'BONEYARD', it is brutal and intense. If you like any of their other stuff, pick this up and support this great band. This is their best cd of their career, I don't care what anyone says cuz the music speaks for itself. This is a damn good metal album!

I'm a fan of DKL after hearing their last alubm, The Dead and Dreaming. All I can say for this latest release is not as good as the last outing. For fans of DKL only....

Just different,
This review is from: Of Vengeance & Violence (Audio CD)
The difference between DKL's previous two albums and Of Vengence and Violence is that they are just different. I personally like this one as well as TDSON and TDAD. Tracks 3,5,7,8,10,12 are really stand out tracks that highlight the different tones Cliff can use in his lyrics. My only problem is with track 13 since it isn't quite as good as Goodnight and No Reason and the fact that DKL can go from intense heavy songs like Lost, Rot or From Victim to Killer to a slow deep acoustic song is one of the reasons that I like them so much. Just remember kids, headbanger's ball is not the end all be all of music. Just because a band doesn't have a video that plays every hour on the hour doesn't mean that they don't have great music.

This release, although not entirely worthless, lacks the originality and charm that the two previous releases had. Their first release was angry, melodic and dreadfully heavy in the Nu-Metal genre...but it had an original meaty take on a dying genre of music. The second album, "Dead and Dreaming" was Dry Kill Logic with more focus and crunchier, more solid songs than ever!
"Of Vengance and Violence," the third release from this incredible band left me wanting more. The guys seem to have been listening to a lot of "Unearth" and "Thrice" before the release of this album. It almost seems as though they are shamelessly jumping on the Metalcore band wagon. Dry Kill Logic..please don't do what Machinehead did! Bring back original music!

Beginning as Hinge with two independent albums under their belt, they changed their name to Dry Kill Logic and with that released an album called "The Darker Side of Nonsense." At that time they had the nu-metal sound akin to Korn but they added a sort of aggressiveness that strived to be seperate from the sound of Korn and for that alone they were seen as one of the better nu-metal acts of the 90's. A couple of years went by, and with a bit of a line-up change, Dry Kill Logic released yet another album called "The Dead and Dreaming." This album was a complete departure from the nu-metal sound, falling more into the metal/hard-core genre, and thus they continue on with that sound as "Of Vengeance and Violence" sounds like what "The Dead and Dreaming" was creating, a metalcore sound with a soothing melodic sound in certain aspects. Here, "Of Vengeance and Violence" can be looked at from some fans as a bit softer than previous albums. While "Darker Side of Nonsense" had "Goodnight" and "The Dead and Dreaming" had "No Reason" (Dry Kill Logic are known for including acoustic songs at the end of their albums), "Of Vengeance and Violence" has two: the acoustic closer "In Memoria Di" and "Kingdom of the Blind," a kind of slow rocking song that might remind some of Staind. That is not to say at all that this album doesn't have heavy-hitting songs, as I found the opener "My Dying Heart" to be the heaviest song on there, with its chugging riffs and double-bass ridden chorus. "4039" has that sort of melodic touch to it but for the most part a heavy song, and "Boneyard" seems like the mosh-pit worthy type of song. The only track I wasn't too keen on is "Confidence vs. Consequence," it's a slow heavy-plodding type of track and nothing really stood out for me. Otherwise this an excellent additon to anyone who is a Dry Kill Logic fan, and sure there will always be detractors that will say they sold out or what have you, the bottom line is only you can decide for yourself. Me, I think this was one of the best albums to come out this year.

Wow, great CD. These guys have a great "not over produced" sound, they have a little sound of all the bands I like: Slipknot, Nothingface, American Head Charge, Mudvayne, maybe a little Killswitch, That "Metalcore/Alternative Metal" sound. Not to say they don't have their own sound, they do, and it's great. The last CD was good too, Check it out , it won't dissapoint!

Pulled this from my mountains of cd's to listen to today. Probably haven't listened to it in a couple years. Reminded me that DKL is one of the better metalcore/scream bands, at least in my mind. Aggresive, loud, pounding...yet listenable, unlike a lot of other bands in this genre. Pick up a used cd...it's worth a listen.

How does a band that came out strong in the shadows of bands like Slipknot and Mudvayne break through to keep their careers? They get better and better and slide into a completely different genre. Let me tell you, I have always loved this band, but I was never really impressed by their writing abilities other than the fact that they could write something catchy and their overall sound was great, but they never impressed me as musicians. I have to say, when I picked up this disc, I was expecting the same and probably knowing then that this would definitely be the last nail in the coffin for these guys. Wow, did they have me fooled! They slid right into more of the metalcore genre this time around and showed everyone that they actually have a lot of musical talent! So, I don't know if they got lessons or if they were just like, "Finally, we don't have to dumb it down anymore!" But yes, this album blew me away from start to finish. If you are expecting the same old DKL from the days of The Darker Side of Nonsense, you aren't going to get that. But if you like some of the newer sound of bands like say Killswitch Engage, or even some of the less mainstream bands like August Burns Red or something, this is definitely right up your alley. ENJOY!
