I jumped on the opportunity to read Carnal Secrets when I first heard about it (because the blurb sounded exciting), but I sure wasn't prepared to what a terrific read it was going to be!

I can only tell you my story: on my way to an exam preparatory course I started reading Carnal Secrets, thinking it would be a good way to keep busy on the bus ride, well the story (and mostly the characters) sucked me in so intensely, that I only stopped reading while I went up the stairs, but unfortunately haven't heard a word in that course as I was too busy devouring Nadia Lee's novel in the back of the classroom. The outside world just ceased to exist for me I was so immersed in Alex and Natalie's world, I was possessed by Carnal Secrets and that's all thanks to Nadia Lee's wonderfully fluent and brilliantly intense writing!

Not only was the plot interesting and well structured, what won me over from the beginning were the amazingly fleshed out characters. Not only were they well developed, but Nadia Lee infused them with such vitality, such passion, that I, as the reader felt and experienced their every emotion right there with them! But before I expand on that let's go back a bit.

Carnal Secrets has a legitimate plot besides the romantic storyline and there are many other aspects to this novel which amazingly strengthen the romance as they shape the characters even better (there is some corporate espionnage, company restructuring, friendships, revenge, family history, and of course the inflammable chemistry between the H/H).

Natalie is an Asian woman, adopted by a wealthy, conservative, white American politician family.

The writing was good and the main characters were good, but the supporting characters mostly sucked and weren't very believeable--maybe because they weren't developed enough. I liked that Natalie was a strong, smart woman, and good at her job. Her family relationships didn't make sense to me AT ALL. She's the adopted daughter of a politician and his wife--except her adoptive mother hates her guts because she didn't want to adopt her and her adoptive father barely pays attention to her. It seems that he's just an absent-minded parent not that he's maliciously neglectful like her mother, but you have to ask yourself WHY they adopted her. Early on (not very spoilerish), you find out that he found her in DC, but it's never explained why THEY adopted her versus her going to a foster home or something (even when she finds out the real story behind her adoption, this isn't answered).

If you take out that whole chunk of the story, the rest mostly makes sense. The writing was good, maybe a little cheesy in parts, but it held my attention and I even bought the next book in the series. Natalie and Alex have some hot sex which is fun to read. All in all, I'd recommend it, but I'm only giving it three stars because it's not REALLY good.

You almost can't tell from the cover-because it's subtle that way- but this book features an interracial romance. You might not care about this, I do. I've always, always, ALWAYS wanted to find authors who write minorities as Main Characters, and hold a soft spot in my heart for interracial couples.

But I almost passed on reviewing Carnal Secrets because I don't find myself enjoying contemporaries often. I liked Nadia Lee's writing style (especially her descriptions, which are usually unique, wistful, and charming) so much though, that I decided to give it a try and I'm SO glad I did.

Natalie is a very intelligent, classy and conservative (read: repressed sex kitten) heroine whose dark past and complicated family lifestyle had me scrolling through pages. I read the entire thing in one afternoon. Her Asian ethnicity isn't superfluous, it's there for a reason. The story would not have been the same if she were a Single White Female. It's a HUGE source of conflict (not necessarily between the Hero and Heroine), not just an accessory to make the heroine seem "exotic".

And her Hero, well... You know, it's odd. I'm starting to like heroes who aren't the typical Knight in Shining Armor types. Alex Damon has his own agenda and when he first pursues Natalie, it's under false pretenses. But he's not a complete bastard. I find heroes with money about as interesting as I do wealthy men in real life-that is to say, I don't but Alex won me over much the same way he did Natalie.

By liking her cat. *grin*

Oh come on, you didn't think I was really going to let a spoiler slip by did you?

In fact, the thing I liked most about this story is that no character is completely unsympathetic. (Well, except Alex's mother...

Good story with lots of twists and turns. Hard to understand some of the family/friends relationships at first but fairly clear at end. Feelings between Natalie and Alex confusing at first, and for a woman in such a powerful position, annoying when Natalie acts like a doormat. The author never has Natalie hold anyone to task for how they treat her until the very end, and then just her father, for a little while. Anyway, worth a read.

And, let me say 3 words--MORNING AFTER PILL! Seems that romance writers have never heard of that as a form of birth control. Though I understand the need for the "uncertain if I'm pregnant" tension in a story, that it's not even mentioned as an option is surprising. Get with the times!
