This is a poignant, day in the life, document of a California community/institution and a colorful taste of its diverse personalities. The images capture the fenetic, the candid, the sublime, the misfit, the outcast, the counter-cultural, and the atmospheric. It is both a joyous celebration and an incisive reflection. A perfect gift, particularly for those unfamiliar with Venice, CA.

For people who are more familiar with Helen K. Garber's elegant b/w photographic city "noir-scapes", this book about Venice will be a surprise, awash in color and tone. The images are shot informally and show the strange and wonderful rhythms and people of the Venice Boardwalk. They are representative photos of moments extracted, with a lot of heart, humor, and talent. I think this is a must have book for anyone who already loves Venice Beach or wants to have a sense of what Venice Beach is like.
