Book Description

October 10, 2006
'This is an almost indescribably ethereal work of love that portrays Venice and its food as no other book has ever done. The illustrations are lush, detailed and deeply reflective of not only the look of Venice, but its very soul, its moods, its history-weighted sadness' Italian Food & Wine Magazine , January 1999 In this book, Sally Spector, who is from Chicago and now lives in Venice, takes us on a mouth-watering culinary trip; her historical love affair with food quite literally gives us a taste of Venice. Each page is beautifully illustrated with the text written in her own hand, sharing her personal impressions of this beloved city. It also provides practical Venetian recipes along with the history of Venice and its long relationship with food, and the ingredients are illustrated in stunning pen, ink and pastel drawings. Sally reveals historical anecdotes about Venice, its food, herbs, spices and cooking implements, as well as buildings, warehouses and even various Venetian personalities, su

By A Customer
This review is from: Venice and Food (Hardcover)
This wonderful history of Venetian cooking records the traditional recipes and how they came about. Emphasizing fresh ingredients and authentic taste, it is a beautifully-illustrated journey through the neighborhoods of Venice, capturing the fresh abundance of a neighborhood vegetable market, an ancient well-head or a graceful little bridge over a quiet canal. Every letter is drawn by hand - a true labor of love perfect for food-lovers, Venice-lovers and history-lovers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A splendid visual history of the culture of food in Venice., December 5, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Venice and Food (Hardcover)
This is one teriffic book related to the history and culture of the "cucina veneziana." It's as much an illustrated history of the architectural glories of Venice as a guide to the why and how of food in Venice. I adore Spector's drawings that show the close relationship between food and architecture all around the city. For example, the Sotoportego e Corte dei Forni is a gorgeous pointed arch opening to a side street, a location imposed on bakeries in historic times. There are profuse and gorgeous depictions of mosaic chickens, live fish, fresh vegetables, and marble fruit baskets. Sample the numerous recipes for simple and authentic Venetian dishes, and you'll discover the real soul of Venice. Venice comes alive in this book!
