The Only Guide You Need to Eat Well in Venice, July 10, 2007
This review is from: Venice Osterie (Paperback)
If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Michela Scibilia's "Venice Osterie" is the original guide to eating well in Venice -- the guide that other guides "consult." First published in English in 1995, Michela, originally from Treviso, is "more Venetian than many Venetians," according to Alessandro Tusset, owner of Elzeviro publishing house. "She truly loves Venice, and it comes through in her book."
Michela's honest and entertaining take on local restaurants, complete with photos of the owners and/or chefs, guides the visitor to some of the best eateries Venice has to offer. Michela has lived in Venice for many years, and has a deep passion for the town.
Venice is a curious city. So many people want to steal a piece of her, to be connected to her, without giving back. So many people without credentials speak with authority about Venice -- people who visit on a superficial level. Venice is like a lover that you can never leave completely... one who demands total commitment. Many arrive in Venice; many write about Venice -- but only a few have the courage to risk the depths the lagoon demands. Michela is someone who has married Venice, and understands that the food of Venice is connected to the Venetians themselves. She respects the food.
Her dedication reads: "To the children who will be born in Venice."
That says it all.

The Best 15 Euros You'll Ever Spend, December 28, 2010
This review is from: Venice Osterie (Paperback)
OK, you've gone to Italy a bunch of times, you LOVE Italy...and Venice, of course, is beautiful, only...well..the FOOD is just...not as good as in other cities. None of those classic moments of Baedeker - less bliss: "we were walking down the street, and we found ourselves in front of this really OLD trattoria, and I said to her "let's try it, what do you think?" and, well, there was nobody there who spoke English, and Grandma was in the kitchen, and we had the BEST _______ we've ever...". In Venice? Uh - uh. No chance. SO...If you don't buy this book, don't come crying to me! You have only yourself to blame.
Every restaurant Venetian friends have ever taken me to, telling me that this is a REAL Venetian place, where REAL Venetians go, is in this book. And Michela's no snob. Hey, even the Hard Rock Cafe's in here! Not that I'll ever go there. But she presents cogent reasons why you might! (why YOU might...) or...(why you MIGHT...).
Her writing is charming, witty and to the point. When you go almost anywhere that's not in this book it just isn't as good as what is. What higher praise can a guidebook get? In the interest of fairness, I'll say that I didn't LOVE every one of her suggestions that I tried. But none of them were bad, and some were amazing.
