4.0 out of 5 stars Helped reduce unnecessary needle sticks., December 17, 2010

I purchased this item for a hospital that I work at for the pediatric unit. There had been many patients who nursing attempted to draw blood from to no avail due to thick skin, collapsed veins, weight issues, etc. Within the first use of this item the nurses were excited about the use. It was used with an overweight patient who was terrified of needles, however after using the Venoscope II, they were able to locate a vein and only had to attempt once to find the vein. This won't fix the issue of veins collapsing during a draw since it only shows the size of the vein and its location, but it does greatly reduce unnecessary needle sticks. It is also still difficult in obese patients to find appropriate veins, but greatly aides in the process. At our hospital, we are definitely glad we purchased this and would suggest this item to anyone in the health care field that has to deal with blood draws.

As a nurse, I prefer looking for the perfect vein (and the angle it is on) and preventing any more pain than needed, to get the blood ordered for the lab. The only thing I didn't like was I didn't get a receipt. I could have used this as a tax write off in my taxes but almost ready to file everything now. Since I have gotten this I have missed maybe 2 people, but with more experience I am sure I will eventually get more. It's difficult to get a vein on someone that has either not had enough fluids or is on a water restriction, and on a water pill. (dehydrated veins)

Very helpful with difficult sticks. I have to make the room very dark which helps with finding veins. It takes getting used to because the veins are usually deeper when you find them with the venoscope. It is a lot easier to blow the vein so I would suggest threading the catheter as soon as you get return with it.
