Once installed, my burners turn on and the Nest controls my furnace perfectly.

So in summary... it worked, it saved me a lot of pain and cost (of running more wire), and it was very easy to install with knowledge gained from The Internets.

If you read this review and decide this product is not for you... that's reasonable. If you blindly order this product, never even try to install it, and then leave a negative review... that's profoundly unreasonable. I was almost dissuaded from this item based on a prior review - even though that review was beyond useless, the product is exactly what I needed, and I have never seen anything else like it. This product offers an ingenious solution for my problem (not enough wires from thermostat to HVAC system), it was easy to install (with some basic knowledge - I have no HVAC training beyond what I found on "The Google") and it works. 5 stars.

As some background, let me say I'm not even a particularly good handyman... I have a drill and not much else for power tools. But to make up for any lack of knowledge/skill, I have an over abundance of confidence and access to the internet. You can decide if that makes me wise or a fool, and whether you trust this review. I am sure this installation carries risks I am not even aware of. You assume all risks and are responsible for any damage/injury/death/electrocution/fire/etc.

To start, I was short on wires after I installed programmable thermostats. The original house wiring had 4 wires to the HVAC, which was sufficient for the original heating/ac thermostats since they were battery powered and didn't need HVAC power (they used: red wire for hot voltage, white wire for heater, yellow wire for cooling, and green wire for fan control). Unfortunately, programmable thermostats generally require external power (usually from the HVAC), meaning they need a 5th wire for ground.

I purchased this from another online retailer but thought I'd post a review to help others. I have a Nest 1st gen thermostat and in December it went haywire. The Nest was not able to turn on the burners, so it would blow cool air. After speaking with Nest tech support, they reached the conclusion that I needed to add a "C" wire. Being a do-it-yourselfer, I searched for alternatives to calling a HVAC person and found the Add-A-Wire. After watching Venstar's online how-2 video, it took me 20 minutes to install. All that's needed for installation is a Phillips screwdriver, electrical tape, needle nose pliers, drill, drill bit, and 2 screws which aren't provided. Once installed, my burners turn on and the Nest controls my furnace perfectly.

I just used Venstar Add-A-Wire to install a Honeywell thermostat that needs a C wire, replacing a thermostat that only needed four wires. If it weren't for the Add-A-Wire, we would have either had to replacing the wiring in the wall, which would have been a huge job, or settle for a much lesser (and probably battery powered) thermostat.

Instead, the Add-A-Wire did exactly what it claimed to do, and was very easy to install.

The only hard part was understanding how the existing wiring differed from the Venstar diagrams. The A/C installer ran the yellow Y wire directly to the compressor, and didn't use the Y terminal on the furnace circuit board. The diagrams showed running the yellow wire to the Y terminal. It turns out that the Y terminal is just a connection point, and isn't actually used by the furnace. It was fine to ignore the Y terminal, and just run the yellow wire from the Add-A-Wire to the compressor, replacing the yellow wire that previously came from the thermostat.

The Venstar Add-A-Wire was a lifesaver and a bargain. I couldn't be happier.

Great product. I am no electrician so I was not sure if I should try this, but I really wanted a wi-fi thermostat and I only had 4 wires and I did not want to lose control of manually operating the fan. I must say, you must watch their YouTube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3pea5qtygo). I really don't know how the average person would ever be able to figure out the install without watching it because the instructions make zero sense and no way would you get to the same answer without watching the video and thus likely kill your hvac electrical. The video is super easy to follow and is only 6 minutes. I wrote the simple to follow steps on a small piece of paper so I would not have to keep running back and forth or keep watching from my mobile device. Anyways, took about 10 minutes in total and voila....I now have my wi fi thermostat up and running. By the way...you can save some money by purchasing on a different site. I saved about 15%, even after shipping...not sure why so much more here on Amazon when not even Prime eligible.

this thing works exactly as advertised. The reason I gave it 4 stars I stead of 5 is because I feel the instructions for installation could be better. But a quick google search gave me the info I needed to complete the installation. I would strongly suggest googling for an installation video. There are a couple out there that makes the installation of this a snap. This is a great product that makes conversion to a 5 wire thermostat a snap.
