This additive is an absolute necessity when operating the Venta Airwashwer. Whenever you replace the water of the Airwasher completely (every 10-14 days according to the manual) and rinse it out, you will need to add a portion of this additive. The bottle lasts for about 12 such cycles.

I have actually found that I need to replace the water every 10 days to avoid the buildup of "gunk" in the water. I have lived in an area where the water had a much higher mineral content compared to where I live now and found myself doing a complete rinse-out of the Airwasher and replacement of the water and the treastment additive every week, just because the build-up of mineral deposits was so high.

Just purchased my Airwasher/ Humidifier and so far am pleased with the ease of maintenance. I felt compelled to write a review and let other consumers know that the required water treatment additive is available from the manufacturer website with no shipping and handling charges, www.venta-airwasher.com

I ordered this item expecting to get the 1 liter (35 oz) bottle of water additive. This item is no longer available as Venta is now only selling the 10 pack boxes of premeasured water additives. Grady's is shipping this box instead of the bottle, claiming that it is an equivalent. In point of fact, it is not equivalent, as the box provides 10 treatments while the bottle provided 20 for the same price! I asked them to send me another box of the packets if they are, in fact, offering an equivalent, but Grady's offered to refund my money after returning the unopened 10 pack box. I elected to return the item for a refund, rather than paying twice the price per treatment.

FYI, the ingredients are
90% - Water
5% - Alkyl* dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride *(41%C14, 28%C12, 19%C18, 12%C16)
Other - Alkyl* dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride *(55% C16, 27% C12, 16% C14, 2% C18)

Purchased Venta Airwasher 2 years ago and put in the additive as recommended. This additive causes a granular yellow residue to collect in the tank, which can be easily rinsed out. In addition, a sticky residue builds up on the fan blades and inside the housing above, which is not easily removed. After I brought the unit out of storage this year I disassembled the housing per instructions, then cleaned the fan, motor and housing, After only two weeks of operation, the sticky gunk is building up inside the housing where it is difficult to reach without disassembly. I asked a Venta representative what would happen if I didn't use the additive, and he replied that the dirt, etc. collected in the tank would be even more unpleasant or disgusting than the yellow droppings. I suggested that there might be other additives which would kill bacteria without leaving a sticky residue inside the housing. That did not elicit a positive response from the Venta representative. But I am going to add white vinegar, as suggested by a consumer on another website, and see if that works. Can anyone else comment on this sticky residue problem with Venta Airwasher?

I have never ever bought this product online. I usually get it at Bed, Bath and Beyond but they seem to think that an air cleaner is a seasonal item so they don't stock it after the winter season. So with nowhere else to go I decided to give Amazon a try. Well, too bad for me that I assumed that the product would be the same size that I purchase at the local store. I had thought that I would receive the 35 oz bottle and I was sent the 17.5 oz bottle. Not only that, I had to pay more that what would be half price. I also had to pay almost $7 shipping and handling. You can be sure that I'm going to stock up in the fall with enough to last a full year and I will be buying it at the Bed, Bath and Beyond store nearby.

Love the Venta. I found the necessary additive cheaper at buyhardwaresupplies. They're selling the large 35 oz bottle (1050 ml) for $21.99. When purchasing last year they had a free shipping > $50 (not sure if they still have this deal). You can find the Venta stuff via their "heating & cooling" selection.

This product is required to operate the Air Washer. Normally I buy direct from Venta. But is nice to know that Amazon has identified other vendors.
