Book Description

February 2, 2010

Haydee Miller is on the brink of panic. when she was sixteen, she swore that she’d be married by her thirty-third birthday. It’s part of Haydee’s grand Plan, which saved her sanity when her mother died and her father was too overcome by grief to remember he had a teenage daughter. The Plan has guided Haydee for half her life and never failed her.  Until now.
With her birthday looming and no Prince Charming in sight, Haydee is surprised to discover that her bookstore’s newest employee is the gorgeous Goddess of Love, Venus herself.
Venus is certain that Haydee’s One True Love is the darkly handsome Derek, a world-renowned photographer who has returned to his hometown to settle down.  The only problem?  Derek and Haydee fell in love ten years ago—before he abandoned her without a word of farewell, leaving her with a broken heart and a secret she has never revealed.
Somehow Venus must heal this damaged woman and reunite her with her True Love. It won’t be easy. Every man in town, married or not, is pursuing Venus, even when she makes herself over into the ugliest woman on earth. Are her goddess powers malfunctioning? Can she make a Love Match without them?

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A misbehaving goddess must tear herself away from her passion for shopping to appease Zeus by serving as a fairy godmother in this amusing sequel to 2008's Venus Envy. In the Oregon town of Bender, Venus finds new godchild Haydee Miller, owner of the appropriately named Mount Olympus Books. Haydee's true love turns out to be her loathed ex-boyfriend Derek Reed, a globe-trotting photographer back in town 10 years after abandoning her, but she's snared a mild-mannered veterinarian in the meantime and is dead set on tying the knot by her next birthday. Meanwhile, men keep falling for the exasperated love goddess. McKelden writes in breezy chick lit style, and while Venus is far more interesting than bland Haydee and her chemistryless interactions with Derek, that will just encourage readers to stick around for future volumes. From Booklist

The charming sequel to the appealing Venus Envy (2006) finds Venus, the Goddess of Love herself, once again forced to play fairy godmother to a wayward mortal. Unlike Venus’ last charge, Haydee Miller is definitely looking for love: she has a carefully mapped-out plan for her life that includes getting married by the age of 33. With her birthday right around the corner, Haydee has mere months to find a husband, and she’s dating with purpose. But Haydee won’t even consider the one man Venus knows is her true love: Derek Reed, who broke her heart 13 years ago. Derek is back in town to woo her once again, but Haydee doesn’t want anything to do with him. Instead she considers settling for a stable, kind-hearted veterinarian. Venus is determined to make sure that doesn’t happen, but she has a big problem of her own when every man in her vicinity starts finding her completely irresistible. Just as winning as its predecessor, McKelden’s second novel will appeal to fans of whimsical romantic comedy. --Kristine Huntley

More About the Author

A native of the Pacific Northwest, Shannon McKelden has wanted to be a writer since she got that first great grade on a short story written in elementary school.

She joined RWA and started writing her first romance novel in 1990, but real life got in the way, and that first book didn't get finished until 1999. It's still on the shelf collecting dust and will remain there for eternity.

After writing a second romance novel in 1999, Shannon found her voice in the chick lit genre. With her first chick lit manuscript, Shannon secured an agent to help advance her career, and learned a lot of patience as she continued to hone her craft for two more years...finally selling her fifth manuscript, a paranormal humorous women's fiction book called VENUS ENVY.

Shannon lives with her family in the Pacific Northwest where she freelances and works on her next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Venus adds the snark, McKelden brings the charm, February 3, 2010
By
Serena Robar (Pacific Northwest) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Venus Guy Trap (Paperback)
Book 2 in the Venus Fairy Godmother series (you certainly don't have to read Venus Envy (book 1) to enjoy this book-though you're missing a delightful read if you don't) brings back our reluctant Fairy Godmother Venus, goddess of love to the scene looking to help our her next victim, er, godchild. No worries on that front, lovely Haydee is all for Venus finding her a husband. It's all part of her life plan. Venus is delighted to find a godchild who truly appreciates her efforts for a change. Things seem to looking up until Venus picks the absolute last guy Haydee would ever give her heart too....again. Determined to be with any man but the one who broke her heart years ago, Haydee refused to be led her down the path of true love, as seen by Venus. She's willing to settle on the kind of guy who can't hurt her. Adding to the Venus's troubles, all the men in town are throwing themselves at her, which would normally delight her, but when she's trying to do her job it get's downright annoying.

This laugh a minute, delightfully fresh take on the classic fairy godmother is a fun romp that makes you believe that mother (or fairy godmother in this case) really does know best. Pick it up today.

4.0 out of 5 stars fun lighthearted urban romantic fantasy, February 4, 2010
This review is from: Venus Guy Trap (Paperback)
Venus "Aphrodite" Cronus may be the Goddess of Love and daughter of Zeus, but she is slaving on earth as a matchmaker. In Bander, Oregon she finds a sigma in a bookstore window that is her target for a love life makeover. Her name is Haydee Miller, whose parents she matched over three decades ago.

Haydee has been going out lately with losers and fears she will fail at the next step on her list; getting married at thirty-three. The list is sacred to her as it gave her comfort when her mom died when she was sixteen. Any deviation has been disastrous. She has six weeks plus to find her mate.

Venus introduces herself and for some unknown reason Haydee hires her and allows her to move into her home. Venus insists she is the Goddess of Love. Two days later Venus says Prince Charming is entering the store. Haydee has a convulsion as anyone but Derek Reed is acceptable. He deserted her to become a world famous photographer. Haydee tells Venus she stinks at matchmaking. They met soon after her mom died and he blew a knee ending his football ambition; they became an entry until he left abruptly. Haydee asks Derek why he is back. He says he missed her. Venus knows her mission is more than matching soulmates with a history; as she also needs to reconcile father and daughter while eluding men who want her and women jealous with Venus Envy.

The cast is extremely well drawn, Aphrodite owns the show as the matchmaker Goddess of Love insists the one man the lead female hates is her true love while she also deals with every male wanting her at a time she wants to go home. The rotation of lead between Venus and Haydee provides a wider perspective to this fun lighthearted urban romantic fantasy.
