Critical Corrective for Koine Greek Understanding, March 25, 2011
This review is from: Verbal Aspect in New Testament Greek (Oxford Theological Monographs) (Hardcover)
Excellent work! The breadth of interactions among older and recent grammars adds to its already "indispensable" value. As a textbook for academic levels below the PhD, however, a few comments need to be made. First, the foreign language quotations need to be translated. Second, quoted passages from the NT text also need to be translated for students at the MDiv or ThM levels since NT Greek is limited in some programs of study. Third, some "confusion" or "non-clarity" seems to be evident with regards to the Perfect and Pluperfect. The pluperfect is treated in parallel with the Perfect aspect, which is vaguely understood as "perfective," but appears to be treated as "imperfective" in illustration. Fanning may view the perfect/pluperfect as involving both perfective and imperfective aspects but he does not say as much directly. Finally, pages 391-2 and 359-60 are displaced in the text!
