Verbal Plenary Preservation,
By Philip Tang (Singapore) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Verbal Plenary Preservation of the Bible, A Course on the Doctrine of Verbal Plenary Preservation (Paperback)
The rationale behind VPP is the assertion that unless Christians have a copy of the Bible whose contents are identical to the autographs (original writings of prophets and apostles)they do not possess the Word Of God, and God is not all-powerful as He claimed. The teaching which is enthusiastically promoted by the Far Eastern Bible College essentially claims that God in 1611, through the KJV translators, RESTORED the contents of the autographs, namely the texts immediately underlying the KJV Bible. The (FEBC's) VPP tenets (dogma) consists of seven statements (propositions),two of which are shown below. VPP statement #2 says that the Scriptures have been miraculously preserved, God breaking into history. They liken what the KJV translators did in 1611 to what Moses did at Mt. Sinai when the ten commandments were rewritten in stone tablets. (This was published in the 'Burning Bush', July 2006, "In defence of the reformed faith, the FEBC and the reformation bible') VPP statement #6 claims that D. A. Waite is the person who can tell what is the perfect Word of God. By implication he is able to tell what is not the Word of God. This teaching is indeed very strange. I thought that work is given to the Holy Spirit.(1 John 2:20,27) 'The "providential" preservation of Scriptures is understood as God's special and not general providence. Special providence or providentia extraordinaria speaks of God's miraculous intervention in the events of history and in the affairs of mankind in fulfilment of His sovereign will for the sake of His elect and to the glory of His Name. The divine preservation of the Canon (books) and Text (words) of Scripture comes under God's special providence. (VPP tenet #2)'( Burning Bush, Jan 2006) "Could God have restored for His Church all of His inspired and preserved words in the days of the Reformation? As the all-powerful God, He certainly could, and by faith we believe He surely did. Just as He restored the Old Covenant words of His Decalogue through His servant Moses (Exod 19:16-21:26, 31:18-32:28, 34:1-4; Deut 5:1-29, 9:20-21, 10:1-5), and all His words in the scroll which Jehoiakim cut up and burned (Jer 36:1-32), so we believe the Lord has similarly done for His New Testament words..." (Burning Bush, July 2006) "Knowing where the perfect Bible is is a matter of textual recognition and NOT textual criticism. In the field of textual recognition, Burgon is good, Hills is better, Waite is best." (VPP #6, Burning Bush, Jan 2006) In conclusion, from what FEBC teaches, VPP is similar to Ruckmanism but differ in this respect. The Ruckmanites claim that the KJV is inspired but the VPPites claim that the (Hebrew and Greek) texts underlying the KJV were restored (reinspired). The texts separate the Ruckmanites and VPPites, but the miraculous part unites them. |
