5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent tips, not so good on the practice
I've used this book in preparing for the MCAT, two things: 1) book is certainly worth reading, Bresnick gives many excellent pointers on speed reading and analyzing the passage 2) the passages at the end of the book are OK, but are not really representative and tend to be a little easier than the real MCAT.

But, despite some of the minor flaws the book is certainly...

1.0 out of 5 stars DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY OR TIME ON THIS!, October 19, 1999

This edition is the worst mcat verbal book I've ever seen in my quest to find a good verbal book. The passages are not even line-numbered! The questions that followed the passages were absolutely moronic and simplistic (these questions can offend anyone's intelligence). More importantly, the questions are NOT representative of the ones on the REAL MCAT. When you are searching for a practice verbal book, remember to find one that resembles the real test as much as possible or you'd be wasting your time (which we mcat students know is extremely precious) doing questions that don't help you prepare for the test. Look into LSAT practice books (especially the old, real LSAT tests now available in bookstores). These real LSAT passages are shorter than the MCAT ones, but they are challenging and the questions are excellent (they are well thought-out and truly require critical thinking skills). The verbal section was my biggest nightmare during my MCAT prep, but I scored an 11 because I worked hard using the right materials.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time!, February 3, 2000

If you only have a few months to study for the MCAT, don't waste your time with this book . The passages are too easy and do not reflect the real MCAT-style questions. This book is for beginners only, say those who are studying a year before the test date and have extremely poor reading comprehension skills.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good practice for MCAT verbal section., July 27, 1999

This review is from: MCAT Verbal Reasoning Powerbuilder (Paperback)
The book offers extremely valuable practice for the MCAT verbal section at a very reasonable price (three full verbal sections and various other passages and questions throughout). However, the tips given to improve reading speed are not effective given that most people start studying for the mcat only a few months before the actual test. If verbal reasoning is your weakest point, then this book is a GREAT place to start. The more practice you get, the better off you will become. Good Luck.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tough, thorough prep for the MCAT, with some flaws., February 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: MCAT Verbal Reasoning Powerbuilder (Paperback)
This is a good book with some helpful tips on how to prepare for the MCAT verbal section. Be forewarned, however, that the questions in the book are tough and that some of the questions do not necessarily represent the type of questions you will see on the actual MCAT. Kaplan does a better job by presenting you with questions more similar to the actual MCAT.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best verbal reasoning preparation I have ever seen, January 10, 1999

This review is from: MCAT Verbal Reasoning Powerbuilder (Paperback)
This book is a great find if you are studying for the MCAT. I have found it difficult to improve my reading speed and comprehension studying on my own and even using a prep course. This book gave me new and real strategies to significantly improve my verbal reasoning. I am scoring much better on practice exams after working through this book. I even had fun working through it!

4.0 out of 5 stars not too bad, July 22, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: MCAT Verbal Reasoning Powerbuilder (Paperback)
if you're like me and need some extra practice on verbal reasoning then i would definitely recommend this book. it's not too expensive and it has 3 full length tests plus some other tips to boost your score. i mainly bought it for taking the practice tests and found that tips for reading speed are fairly ineffective. you can either read quickly with absorbtion or you can't. i found that the tests are pretty close to real mcat passages but maybe a bit easier.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good, December 13, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: MCAT Verbal Reasoning Powerbuilder (Paperback)
This is book is very good for practicing passages that capture the ambiguous feeling of the mcat. The question stems are shorter thatn the actual one but the practice is excellent. Not to mention the price! Very good practice for the verbal section overall... PS don't follow their strategies though... !
