The audio went out on my son's laptop (Dell Inspiron 5100) and since audio circuit is integrated with the motherboard, the only solution at first seemed a complete motherboard replacement. Fortunately, I found these USB speakers that provide a workable solution. Beware - many *other* "USB" speakers are only USB-powered and you still have to plug an audio cable into the analog audio output jack of your computer. That was not a solution in our case because the audio output was fried. However, *these* speakers are purely USB connected, incorporating a USB-interfaced digital to analog audio circuit right in the speaker housing. The speakers were automatically recognized as an external USB audio device by Windows XP as soon as we plugged them in, and he once again has sound output from his laptop!

I bought this speaker for my laptop. When watching DVDs, the volume has never been sufficient. The speaker is great and really enhaces the sound. You can also control the volume right from the speaker itself.
I would recommend this to anyone.

I bought these speakers for my MacBook.
1) The design is great, with the retractable USB cord that can be hidden totally inside. They're very light & seem sturdy.
2) The volume is very good. The internal speakers at full volume are the same as these at 1/4 volume.
3) Sound quality is ok. The internal speakers sound slightly better at the same volume. These are fine for casual listening but they sound a little more tinny than the internals. That said, the extra volume more than makes up for this. With these speakers one can hear music right across the house.
4) Mute key & volume controls on the speaker are good. Curiously, on the MacBook they work even when the built-in speakers are selected.

Also, after selecting these speakers, unplugging them reverts to the internal speakers, then reconnect the USB and they're again automatically selected which is nice - rather than having to go to System Preferences every time. Also very nice, the Mac remembers volume and mute separately for the internal & USB speakers, so re-connect them and the volume is where you left it for these speakers, not where you had the internal speakers set.

Bottom line: not for audiophiles, but for casual music, Skype/iChat, etc. these things are great and provide all the volume, portability and convenience one could want.

These are great speakers for a great price. Easy to carry around, doesn't take up alot of space. Lightweight. Looks like a phone. Since buying it, 3 of my friends have bought it too. I had to order another one myself.

I bought these speakers for my boyfriend for his laptop and they are awesome! Before, we could barely hear the sound on the laptop with the speakers and I had to plug in these huge clunky speakers that had to be plugged into the wall. These speakers, on the other hand, are lightweight, compact, very portable (the cord zips right back into the speaker like one of those string pull toys), AMAZING sound quality and best of all, are powered by the USB cord that plugs into the computer. A+++!

I like these speakers. They're extremely lightweight and compact. Some have said they look like cell phones. Another cool feature is the retractable USB cable, similar to a measuring tape. I would have given them a 5, but I thought the sound could have had just a little louder capacity and then they would have been perfect.

My laptop soundcard is on the fritz and it'd take 3 weeks to ship it off for repair. USB-powered speakers to the rescue.
The sound is good to great. Words are clear and distict; music is, too. For the price they do well. However, these are small speakers and don't have much volume. Figure on a radius of 7-10 feet. You can hear it much farther away; but volume suffers.
I enjoy their portability; they fit right in my laptop case.

These speakers give excellent value for money. They are vastly superior to the built-in speakers on my MacBook and definitely worth the c. $20. The volume and base are both quite good. Of course, they are not as good as my more expensive and bulkier Bose speakers. The base is not as deep, there is some distortion if you turn them up *really* loud -- but you *can* turn them up really loud if you want to. These speakers are better than any similarly priced and even some more expensive speakers I have purchased. Well designed, compact, light weight, and the retractable cord is an excellent feature and works. I don't normally take the time to write reviews, but this item is worth my recommending to people who, like me, are looking for something inexpensive, serviceable, and portable.

When I first opened the box, dug through the packing paper and finally spied this little package sitting at the bottom, I thought at first that someone had screwed up and sent me a cell phone. But no, these were the speakers. Still, they work great! I guess I've forgotten how much smaller electronics have gotten these days. Now I can listen to my favorite broadcast stream while I'm out in the kitchen (the local affiliate went belly-up, which renders the radio useless in that respect), just by using an extension USB cord.

Lightweight, decent sound, and has a little spring-loaded cable that conveniently disappears into a tiny compartment, these speakers fold up into a small, easily-packed unit (see above), and should be a great adjunct to tiny, tinny laptop speakers.

Got these to toss in my laptop bag for travel and presentations. Good sound, nice and compact, effective cord storage, and it's nice to not have to worry about batteries.
