3.0 out of 5 stars Basic Notebook Mouse With Narcolepsy, July 1, 2009
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
There are as many opinions about mice as there are hands to fit them, so it is always a bit tricky to review them. To give you some context, I will begin by telling you the type of mouse I prefer, which is medium sized and simple. For example, the standard Microsoft USB mouse fits my hand perfectly. The larger premium optical mice from Logitech are a bit clunky for me, and all of the navigation buttons tend to get in my way more than help, though the scroll wheels and buttons are excellent.

The Verbatim 96781 is similar in width to a standard desktop mouse, but the rear is chopped off, leaving no wrist support. I have been stress testing it at work and have found that I can adjust to this, but it is not ideal. However, this is a notebook mouse and not really meant for primary computer use, leaving this trade-off in size vs. function very understandable. If you are used to notebook mice, I think you will find the size a very good compromise, as opposed to the somewhat painful skinny mice.

The primary selling point in the promotions for this mouse is the USB dongle. Indeed, it is as small as it could possibly be without requiring a tool for removal. This is a natural progression of the ever decreasing dongle size and a welcome change. Will you, as they say, be able to leave it plugged in all the time? That depends on your laptop case. The dongle still protrudes from the side and might still snag if you have a hard case that perfectly fits the laptop. Otherwise, I think it would be fine to leave it in during transport.

The scroll wheel is very average in feel and the buttons feel decently "clicky." This is certainly a cut above the ultra cheap no-name mice you might have had the misfortune of using in the past, with decent construction. The dongle can be housed within the mouse, as is the standard for most mice now. The range is very good, despite the diminutive size. In terms of aesthetics, the mouse looks completely generic and should match most electronics, mimicking the Dell look. However, I am basing this on the black and grey color scheme. Other colors will likely catch your fancy if you are looking to make a statement without going out on too much of a limb.

Connecting the mouse and setting it up is all very simple and automatic. However, after using the mouse during regular work, I have run into one major annoyance: the thing falls asleep like a narcoleptic. Many wireless mice automatically go into a sleep mode after a predetermined period of time, requiring a button press to wake them up. This is a good feature, as it extends battery life without the use of an on/off button, which most forget to use. However, this little guy falls asleep far too fast. The included literature even mentions this short delay. What that means is that if you are doing a task that requires you to stop using the mouse periodically, the mouse will just seem to stop working. This could be especially problematic if you are giving a presentation and talking between each slide. Waking up the mouse with a click of either button is simple, but the sleep time really should be much longer.

In conclusion, the Verbatim 96781 Nano Wireless mouse is a solid mouse that will work well for most notebook purposes. The range is good, the dongle is impressively small, and the construction, while not remarkable, is suitable for the price range. If you can look past the compressed shape and bedtime habits, it is a very solid buy.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
It is quite hard to review mice these days because there are a plethora of them in the market. However small mice are sometimes on the expensive side and do not really work as advertised. The Verbatim is a gem in this category because of the following simple reasons:

1. Great VALUE
2. Light Weight
3. Excellent Design
4. PLUG n PLAY

The box includes the mouse, a usb dongle, AAA (triple a) batteries, software, and manuals.

Yes, software is included...but sometimes I feel that these devices should work out of the box and no additional software should be necessary...and for me one of the core features MUST be cross platform interoperability. This MOUSE works on PC's as well as MAC's by just plugging the dongle in. There is a slot on the rear of the mouse that you can insert the dongle into, which in effect powers off the mouse.

The scroll wheel is perfectly balanced..not too tight and not too loose. It feels comfortable and does not make your nerves tingle (most computer users will know what i mean about tingle).

I tested the mouse on the following surfaces:

1. A desk
2. Marble Counter Tops

It worked perfectly on both surfaces...and that says a lot for this mouse. Why? Simply because most mice that cost double what this mouse costs do not respond well to marble counter tops...they simply refuse to move...this puppy moved. You no longer need to spend $$ on a blue mouse (no brands mentioned) to get this support.

Excellent product, excellent value, and perfect composition.
5/5

4.0 out of 5 stars Great mouse for my netbook, June 24, 2009
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I got this mouse to use with my ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch Netbook (1.66 GHz Intel Atom N280 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB Eee Storage, Bluetooth, XP Home, 9.5 Hour Battery Life) Black. I had looked at some of those little "mini" mice, but they seemed like they would cramp my hand, plus they were not cordless.

This mouse seems to be just what I needed. The "nano" receiver sticks out less than 1/2" from my netbook. The mouse is a nice size for my hand, about the size of a normal mouse.

The installation was simple. I inserted two AAA batteries (not included) into the mouse and put the receiver into the USB port. That was it...everything worked fine without any software. For travel purposes, the receiver clicks into the bottom of the mouse for safekeeping.

Overall, a perfectly good solution to my need for a netbook computer mouse. Recommended.

This mouse was purchased as a gift for my girlfriend and has been nothing but trouble from the first moment that we received it.

The only positive thing that I have to say about it is that the receiver is the perfect size for a netbook.

When it first arrived I chose to test it on our primary desktop machine, which is running Vista. The drivers wouldn't install properly so it couldn't actually be used there at all.

Once we plugged it into her new netbook with Windows 7 we had a much better experience with the drivers and it started working after only a few seconds. The only problem there was that it would cause the cursor to start erratically floating and shaking while the mouse was completely stationary on the solid wood kitchen table.

We will be throwing this in the trash as soon as we purchase a new purple nano mouse from another manufacturer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great product, great price, short battery life, October 30, 2009
Positives: Just what I needed, at a fraction of the cost of competing models. I can easily switch the USB nano piece from laptop to laptop with no issue, and no delay in picking up and going. No problems with connectivity, etc. I use this all day every day, so around 50+ hours a week.

Battery life: Short, 5 weeks for 2 AAA batteries, I've been through two sets since my original purchase.

I did have a major issue with the scroll wheel after owning this product for 6 weeks. I detailed here, and a Verbatim representative got in touch with me via Amazon and pointed out that there is a one year warranty. With no hassle, I was sent a new mouse, and so far, so good. With the warranty, I would say this is a safe purchase and certainly a bargain compared to others.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE this thing, with one funny flaw, June 29, 2009

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I bought myself a black MacBook after Thanksgiving, after wanting it for years. Although I love it, I am not used to some laptop things like having to use your little touchpad for everything. It gets a bit frustrating sometimes, because the touchpad is so sensitive, sometimes I haven't even touched the pad, and it sends a message to the computer to do something I hadn't wanted to do.

Anyway, enter the Nano wireless mouse. Love it! It is a nice compact design, and has a nice feel in my hand. It also came w/ the two AAA batteries needed to operate. The mouse is also available in several cute colors, but mine is black. There is a little wireless connection that you plug into one of your USB ports. This thing is small enough that you just leave it there, unless you need your ports for many things. If you have to take the wireless connection out, it stores underneath the mouse in a tidy spot, it clicks into place.

I used the included CD ROM to download the software for the mouse w/o a hitch, and I was up and running in a few minutes. The whole thing is very self-explanatory and easy.

Also, switching between using the mouse and not using it is easy, just use your computer's track pad if that is handy. If you are ready to use the mouse again, just click it a few times to "reactivate" it, and you're all set.

I waited for several months to get a wireless mouse because I didn't know which one to buy. This is the one!

EDITED 7/24/09: Now that I have been using this mouse for about a month now, I have to report that there is one quirk with it. Sometimes the cursor trails off on its own, for no apparent reason. Sometimes it makes me select something I didn't want to select in a pull-down menu, because I was going to click on something to select it, and because it starts to roll off, I click on the wrong thing. Usually it doesn't really affect me besides that. I still like this mouse and still recommend it, despite this quirk.

4.0 out of 5 stars nice size, tiny receiver, & works on multiple surfaces, June 24, 2009
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I love the size of the "nano" receiver for this mouse. With larger mouse receivers I worry about breaking them off.

However if what is really important to me is how the mouse works and this one works great.

- The size is comfortable even for extended use.
- It works on various surfaces (even a micro fiber couch fabric
- installed easily (did not need the disk)
- tracked smoothly even when feet away from the receiver.

1.0 out of 5 stars very jumpy not smooth, March 9, 2010
By
This mouse is a nice size and having the usb dongle fit into the mouse when not in use is a very nice feature and I really wanted to like this mouse. It is jumpy and lacking smooth cursor movement- this makes it unusable. The wheel works fine.

I thought I had bad luck so I got a replacement and found the same problem. Tried different batteries and several computers. I don't know if I am very unlucky or if other bad reviews have just been deleted, but my recommendation is to stay away from this mouse. I have wasted far too much time trying to get these two mice to work.

For about a month I loved this little mouse, then it stopped working. I changed the batteries 2 different times and it still does not work. I paid what I thought was pretty much and now to have a dead mouse is upsetting. Sorry I spent the money. I'm currently using one of my husbands, a Microsoft and it always works. Just wish it had the tiny plug-in adapter. Don't waste your money!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Scroll button spaz, October 11, 2009

I bought this about two months ago as a secondary mouse to use in my sound booth, but have been using it as the primary one to get used to it. It started out fine; tracking and clicking have never been a problem, but in the past couple of weeks the scroll button has started spazzing out, to the point now where pages will scroll without my ever touching the scroll button. Very annoying.
