Very Nice and Convenient, March 23, 2010
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I received the Verbatim Acclaim 320 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive 97164 yesterday and I have already copied over all of my important photographs, documents and other important electronic files which I want to keep at hand.
Moving files over to this Hard Drive is rather fast even without the optional Turbo USB software it comes with. I timed that it took about 5 minutes (8:48pm - 8:53pm) to move a folder containing 3.19 GB of data over from my desktop to this Hard Drive.
Moving the same folder of files (3.19 GB of data) from the Hard Drive back to my desktop was quicker and took about 4 minutes (9:03pm - 9:07pm). This is rather nice because I often find the transfer rate of files from desktop to external storage to be much faster than the other way around.
If you are someone who needs to carry around 320 GB of data with you this is a great little device. It's rather small, and measures to be about 4.5" x 3" and 1/2" thick , it creates hardly any noise (if any), and doesn't require an external power supply. It does install a driver automatically in a few seconds but no software was needed to be installed manually.
A few concerns I have about its durability and lack of security. Regarding the durability of the case I hopefully I can find a nice cover to keep it in otherwise I worry that something may happen to its case if just tossed into a purse.
However I'm not sure about the hard drive's security. I currently have a ScanDisk Cruzer flashdrive and it comes with software which provides an option for the user to password protect it. If I were to lose the ScanDisk Cruzer flashdrive anyone who happened to find it would have to completely re-format it, and thus doing so they end up erasing all data from the ScanDisk Cruzer flashdrive before they are able to access it. I may have lost the ScanDisk Cruzer flashdrive but no one would be able to access any confidential files I have on it. It is not the case with the Verbatim Acclaim 320 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive 97164.
Last I have a minor complaint about the hard drive and it's that the outer shell (Piano Black) shows finger prints extremely well.
If I was to make any suggestions it would be to provide the option to password protect the harddrive and to offer the Verbatim Acclaim in a black matte finish as the Verbatim 320 GB USB 2.0 CL N Portable External Hard Drive 97061 (Black Matte Finish) is.
Suggestions I have for anyone purchasing this product would probably be to also purchase a carrying case to protect it.
A quick breakdown would be:
Pros
1. Besides a small driver there isn't any software to install
2. Extremely quiet
3.Lot's of storage in a rather small unit
Cons:
1. Case shows any fingerprint
2. Hard plastic case may not be very sturdy. Maybe best to buy a case to protect it if you plan on using it for travel
3. Does not come with security software to protect it in the event if you were to lose it and someone was to find it.

Beware of Plugging and Unplugging the drive, April 30, 2010
Mine is a 500 GB. When I FIRST CONNECTED the drive to an EXTENDED USB cable (b/c the included cable is too short), the drive kept making ticking sound (tic tic tic tic). I was so worry and kept thinking that the drive might be defective. However, when I tried to connect the drive directly to the USB port of the case (not through an EXTENDED USB cable), Windows just recognized the drive instantly! SO, THOSE PEOPLE HAVING TICKING SOUND (I see many complain about this on the internet) WHEN TRYING TO CONNECT THE HDD SHOULD TRY TO CONNECT IT DIRECTLY TO THE USB PORT OF THE CASE. Also, people who complaint about their drive not being recognized by Windows after some times using it should know that when you disconnect the hdd, you MUST use the function Safely Remove Hardware of Windows. If you just disconnect the drive by unplugging the usb cable without ejecting it through Safely Remove Hardware first, the drive may still usable after the first time doing it but will die eventually after 3 or 4 times doing so. I have used many flash drives and portable hdd and I've encounter this problem many times.
P/s:
* Tips for copying files to flash drives/portable drives faster:
- When moving large amount of small files (such as 100+ files and each files is ~ 1mb), ZIP or COMPRESS the files into 1 zip/rar file first, then move the large zipped file will be VERY MUCH faster. One time,I copied 3000+ files (each file is < 1MB) to my Kingmax 4gb flash drive and it just froze when copying halfway. Then I tried to remove it through Safely Remove Hardware but couldn't, and I just unplugged the drive -> Guess what? Windows couldn't recognize the drive the next time I plugged it in -> the drive was absolutely death.
- Transferring files from HDD to the portable drive is always slower than transferring files from the portable drive to HDD.
* You should reformat the drive using NTFS system.
* Also, remember that all commercial HDDs/flash drives' capacity is calculating base on 1gb = 1,000,000,000 bytes (not 1gb = 1024*1024*1024 = 1,073,741,824 bytes in Windows). So the actual capacity of the 500gb verbatim is actually 465gbs.
Pros:
- Very small (less than palm size) with glossy surface.
- Fast transferring speed (average 30Mb/s when copying a 4.7gb file from hdd sata 2 Western Digital Caviar Black to Verbatim drive).
- Quiet operation (hardly hear any sound when the drive is running).
Cons:
- Extremely short cable (mini USB to standard USB).
- Attract finger prints easily.

Too Good to Be True, August 17, 2010
Update - a year later... I finally sent this drive to Verbatim, knowing that I was going to lose everything on it. Luckily it meant only losing about 20 minutes of video and a few hundred photos. It could have been much worse. They sent me back a new or refurbished drive, which I've since attached to my Network Attached Storage device so I can map a drive to the Verbatim from all of my networked machines. I've been using it as a working drive, to transfer files from various other back-up devices to the main NAS (RAID 0) drive. It works fine and I've not experienced any other problems with it in the 6 months since receiving the new drive. What I've learned from this is that you have to carry at least two drives to make sure you have redundant backup when travelling. I'll probably also make sure I have a bigger drive in my laptop to give me an extra level of protection (and upload everything important to a cloud drive as time and Internet access permits). ------------------------- I bought this drive just under two months ago, before a big trip overseas. I knew I'd be taking a lot of photos and HD video, and wanted to make sure I had a place to store all the files until I could get home and copy them to my network storage device. At first everything with the Verbatim Acclaim USB 500GB drive was fantastic. I would plug it in and it would pop right up. File transfers were zippy. The only issues is that it would sometimes not allow itself to be disconnected using the "Safely Remove Hardware" feature on Windows XP, so I'd have to just leave my computer running until it would let me stop the drive to remove it. But today, the drive failed. I was in the process of moving files on the drive from one folder to another when it stopped responding and took out Windows Explorer. I had to restart the computer from Task Manager after waiting for 10 minutes for things to settle down. I restarted the computer many times, and the drive was not found by the computer after that, even though the power indicator was lit. Finally, the drive was found by my computer, but showed up as "Local Drive." And after many minutes of waiting I was able to open the drive, but received a notice that the drive was unformatted and needed to be formatted. So much for my 80+ GB of video and photos I've taken so far. As of posting this review, the drive is back to not being recognized by the computer, even though I was once able to find the "Verbatim" drive on the "Safely Remove Hardware" feature. Now it's just gone. I've sent a message to Verbatim's tech support folks...we'll see how they do.
