I recently purchased this drive for use as photographic image back-up storage, as well as a data back-up for my start-up drive. I removed the supplied "BounceBack Express" backup software since I already have the excellent "SuperDuper" application running on my Mac. The Verbatim 1 TB drive I received (Jan. 2009) actually contains a WDC WD-10EA 7200 rpm drive. I was able to easily partition it into 700GB and 232 GB partitions.

The drive is enclosed in a nice aluminum box with a polished black plastic front panel. The case does have a small fan that is inaudible in operation. There is only the one green LED pilot lamp and no "disk activity indicator". I like to know when my drives are working so I deducted (1) star for the lack of any kind of a activity indicator. There is one USB 2.0 port and the drive comes with a short (24 inch) USB cable. There is a rear panel on-off push-button switch which is flush with the back panel so is hard to spot if it's dark. A small "wall-wart" power supply is provided.

The drive is very quiet with only a little disk "head-seek" rattle when transferring large files.

The drive is rated at "up-to" 480 Mb/sec. transfer rates. I was able to achieve a write transfer rate of about 91 to 97 Mb/sec reading from my iMac's internal 230GB drive which was probably the limiting factor. As a fast, basic USB 1TB external drive, this seems to be a pretty good deal. It comes with everything you need, but nothing you don't need and has a 3-year warrantee.

Works for me!

Dish Network (Satellite TV) lets you connect an external hard drive via USB. Once you connect the drive, the Dish software formats the hard drive. After that you can use the on screen program guide to transfer any media (video/photos) stored on the DVR disk to the Verbatim hard drive, and vice versa, or you can play recorded programs or view photos directly from the hard drive. So I leave the Verbatim drive powered on all the time and after three months, I have had no problems with it. As for speed, it takes about 4 minutes to transfer a 30 minute HD program, but I can play back recorded programs directly from the Verbatim drive without any visible or audible loss of quality.

This is an amazing External Hard drive. I have owned it now for a little over 3 months (which I think is how long one should wait before writing a review). And have had no problems.

Whoever said they had to restart it for it to be recognized after windows reboots, I haven't had any issues like that, although I am using Windows XP.

I even accidentally spilled liquid directly onto it and it continues to work perfectly.

I only used Western Digital for large external storage before this, and Verbatim has impressed me with this model for sure.

I purchased the drive 12/10/2011. This weekend, 2/4/2012, the drive failed. I ran through some common troubleshooting steps such as unplug and plug it back in. Also, connected the drive to another PC. Finally ran scan disk. Windows reported bad blocks on the drive. In my experience, when bad blocks show up, you cannot trust the drive going forward.

I contacted Verbatim support via email. I did not get a response over the weekend, which I did expect. I received a response about 20 minutes ago 2/6/12 @2pm. Basically the email listed all the troubleshooting steps I already took and also detailed in the original email to support. Looks like they did not actually read my email. Rather, they copied and pasted a standard response. Way to go verbatim...

Considering the drive lasted barely 3 months just sitting on my desk and the response by support, I will never buy a verbatim product again.

Got mine yesterday. It has a Samsung HD203WI drive internally. That means they are now cooler and quieter than earlier models that had Western Digital internal drives. They are so cool that they no longer include the small fan at the rear - it's merely a 1-inch square vent. Even after several hours the drive is cool to the touch. The bottom of the enclosure is vented as well.

Formats to 1.81TB NTFS although it comes pre-formatted with FAT32. USB 2.0 transfer rates are typical 30MB/s. Comes with Nero BackItUp 4 Essentials software although I did not need it.

USB cable is very short, about 24-inches in length. AC adapter is small and power cable is thin and long, about 60-inches in length.

Update 8/11/2011: I have purchased 3 of these total. All of them have Samsung hard drives internally. They all still work without a problem. Eventually they won't be using Samsung drives anymore as Samsung sold their hard drive division to Seagate. So I will probably buy a few more just to have the Samsung drives before they switch out to a different brand for the OEM.

Still highly recommend!

Bought this item from Amazon on the day after Thanksgiving for $80, then later on got a $10 refund check from Wired magazine, making the price even better.

Have been used this Verbatim 1TB USB ext HDD for more than 2 months, so far so good. The noise is less than the Maxtor 500GB USB ext HDD, shut-down is faster. Nice built, no complaint yet. BTW, I'm using Windows XP.

Will share more info if there's an update.
