It's amazingly compact, works great and is fast!

The great thing about this is the small size, I didn't want a big drive sticking out of my car audio deck and this fits the bill perfectly.

Would not work a month later after not being used.

I love the form factor - install it, leave it, and it's there when you need it.

Raised rating from 4 to 5 stars on July 16.

Fast sequential speeds -

July 6, 2011-Entire card FAT32
Test finished without errors.
Writing speed: 6.03 MByte/s
Reading speed: 10.5 MByte/s

July 6, 2011-Entire card NTFS
Test finished without errors.
Writing speed: 6.25 MByte/s
Reading speed: 10.7 MByte/s

July 16, 2011-Entire card exFAT
Test finished without errors.
Writing speed: 6.55 MByte/s
Reading speed: 11.3 MByte/s

Random speeds were not fast enough for Readyboost until I formatted it to exFAT.

This is a nice product. Verbatim could improve it by using a faster chip like they use in their Tuff n Tiny. I would also like to see a 32GB version.

What a super little gift this would be!

Jim

This review is for the 16Gb version.

I purchased this to run a couple flavors of live Linux on my netbook. It is very small and fits well, not difficult to remove and doesn't snag on anything. That's where the good part ends though.

The transfer rates are horrible on this memory. Using Linux Mint 10 and transferring a 1.1 Gb iso file of Debian rates were as follows.

Write speeds when formated as FAT32 started out at 8.9 MB/s and dropped to 5.9 by the end of the transfer. When formated as Ext3 it started out at 8.5 MB/s and dropped off to 4.5 by the end.

Read speeds were 10.0 - 10.3 for FAT32 and Ext3

Other USB drives were as follows:

Write speeds for the Patriot XT 16Gb started at 16.9 and fell to 12.1 in FAT32 and about the same for Ext3 give or take .1

Read speeds on the Patriot were 28.3 - 28.8 as FAT32 and about the same for Ext3 again.

All my other USB keys (several Sandisk and PNY) fell somewhere in the middle to low end of the spread.

I knew that the speeds were not going to be anywhere near the Patriot speeds, but I certainly expected better from Verbatim. It's possible that this could be bad memory, I'm not sure. Data retention is fine, never a crash or any loss at all, the speed just sucks. Since I bought this to run an operating system, it needs to be faster than what it is. This item will be going back.

I wanted a USB flash drive that I could use as ReadyBoost on my Win 7 laptop. I have a Scandisk 8GB USB drive that works well with ReadyBoost, but it gets on the way and had to be unplugged before the laptop was placed in the computer bag. This Verbatim USB 2.0 Flash Drive is an excellent choice as it doesn't get on the way, even when the laptop is stored in the computer bag.

Note that it's formatted as FAT32 from the manufacture. If you want to use it as ReadyBoost simply perform a "quick" format to NTFS.

Thumb drives are pretty much a commodity item - assuming the read write speeds are reasonable for your application (more on that later). The most important factor these days seems to be size - length - and boy have they shrunk!

The first shrunken thumb drive I purchased was the HP v165w 16 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive P-FD16GHP165-EF (Blue). HP is a good name (its apparently really made by PNY, another good name), but "Verbatim" was new to me (except for remembering the name as a floppy disk brand).

Turns out it works fine. Transfer rates when I move smaller music files or larger video files to and from the thumb drive are comparable to other high performing thumb drives and SD cards.

So I can safely recommend this for portable storage. I use mine to move music and video files between Macs and Windows computers - I can't use (most of) my USB external hard drives for that purpose due to the different hard drive formatting between Macs and Windows - Mac can read a Windows formatted hard drive but not write to it (the exception is the Seagate which comes with an accessory program that loads onto the Mac). I use the Verbatim to add extra video storage space to SSD equipped notebooks I have, and it excels for this application because it won't get knocked out and doesn't have to be removed to place in the case.

Where this Verbatim thumb drive excels is in hugging the side of the computer so it is less prone to get knocked around. It is also great if you have a car radio that can directly read music files from a thumb drive (many of the latest factory radios do this).

I wanted a low profile USB stick to use in my car radio. This fit the bill. I bought 2 of them. The only issue I have with it is that on one of the items, the black plastic surrounding the electronics came off. It didn't affect the functionality, but makes me wonder about the quality.

I love the stay feature. It fits perfectly with minimum protrusion. I do agree that if you intend to take out often you stand the risk of losing it. It is about the size of a dime, and it can be easily misplaced. I find that the transfer rates are a bit slow, but I do not regret the purchase. I would like to have seen it in a 32GB size. Despite, the transfer rates I am satisfied with the purchase.
