With a laptop I found it needs power cord. It works well and does what it is supposed to do.

bought this so I could power my hard drive to use with my Oppo dvd player. Let's me play movies directly from my ext. HD.

I needed this product to get my FireLite drive working. I guess the only thing that would have made it a five star rating is that it should have been included with the FireLite drive in the first place because the FireLite drive has trouble connecting to some USB ports that don't provide enough power to devices connected to them.
