5.0 out of 5 stars Verdi like no one else September 25, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I recall during my college days when an unknown to me Verdi Opera was published, Giovanna d'Arco. This recording had Caballe' Domingo and Milnes as never before and never after. The conductor was a young guy called James Levine and despite the illustrious company he was with, I was hit by his performance more than the other guys if possible.
The overture is simply inimitable, with energy and command. The brasses were like blades glittering in the dark something no other conductor made me listen to in the same overture (not the lethargic Karajan, Downes or even Muti to ignore the less famous batons). This to say that Levine is totally imbued with Verdi music, he feels it and makes us feel it too. Let the cd go and enjoy a rare master of the game. Difficult task is to mention this instead of that, just let Verdi/Levine flow.
