NB This is a review of the Ponto release of the same Opera Rara recording.

This Ponto recording (John Matheson/London 1972) of the 1867 score (which includes passages cut before the Paris premiere) is a carbon copy of the Opera Rara release, but without the latter's bulky packaging (only a 12-page booklet, helpful though it is). Compared with the Orfeo set of the 2004 Vienna performance of the same score (also released on DVD, a terrible production), the Ponto is preferable, as far as both voice and intonation are concerned: at Vienna, the performers (none of them French) show signs of difficulty coping with the language, not to mention the fact that they are generally below their best. In addition to Robert Lloyd (Monk) and Richard van Allan (Grand Inquisitor), the 1972 mainly French-Canadian cast are more comfortable with the text: Joseph Rouleau (Philippe), Andre Turp (Carlos), Robert Savoie (Rodrigue), Edith Tremblay (Elisabeth), and Michelle Vilma (Eboli). Though Verdi's revisions are superior, much of the music from the original is too memorable to be discarded: the woodcutters scene, the duets (Rodrigue/Carlos, Philippe/Rodrigue, Elisabeth/Philippe, Eboli/Elisabeth, and Carlos/Elisabeth), the masquerade and ballet, the quartet, Emeute, and finale. Minor vocal disappointment comes from Vilma's occasionally blowzy Eboli, and Savoie's slightly wobbly Rodrigue (sounding more bass than baritone, he almost chokes during the trio with Elisabeth and Eboli). The ENO Guide (Number 46) is an excellent substitute for the missing libretto on this set, which (consoling compensation) includes highlights from the revised version but sung in French (Alain Vanzo/1961). If you're on a tight budget (the OR release is too pricey), get this recording (the sound is faultless) with the ENO text (which - in addition to the libretto in French, Italian and English - contains informative articles and editorial notes on textual variants in English).

This set is definitely too expensive for the value of the performance. The package is great - de luxe - contains 4 CDs, a huge booklet with lots of color photos, detailed information about the opera and libretto in several languages, all packed in a solid glossy box. In my opinion the orchestral and choral parts are top class as are most of the soloists. Unfortunately, Don Carlos ruins it for me. He shouts most of the time. Rodrigue's voice is too deep for my taste - almost better suited for the opera's grand inquisitor. I think Pappano's version with Alagna and Hampson is better and I am not an Alagna fan. If you can get a good used Opera Rara set for half the price, it may be worth it. But a hundred bucks?

This original version is not bad -actually it's one of the best in French- but it's too expensive. Other labels, like Ponto, released this recording and they added rare bonuses. Besides, the Ponto version is much cheaper.

Voilà trente ans que la maison de disques Opera Rara se consacre aux opéras rarement donnés et encore plus rarement enregistrés. Trouvant leurs prix exagérément élevés pour des interprétations finalement très plates, je me défie de leurs productions. Elles ont cependant le mérite d'être uniques. Sauf dans le cas de «Don Carlos» : ici, on a juste les bandes du concert de Camden Theatre de 1972 retransmis sur la BBC l'année d'après. Il s'agit de celles que le label Ponto avait déjà utilisées en 2002. L'intérêt du coffret sorti par Opera Rara est donc très limité : on le paye trois fois plus cher que son prédécesseur pour la même musique sans que le son ne soit amélioré (le duo entre Rodrigue et Carlos semble toujours avoir été enregistré dans leur cuisine). De plus, les bonus présents sur le disque Ponto sont ici absents. Reste le livret : comme toujours avec Opera Rara, il est conséquent mais il n'est qu'en anglais (arrogance britannique ?) et on n'y lit que les commentaires que l'on a lus partout ailleurs et qui de toute façon ne remplacent pas «L'Avant-Scène». Le texte de l'opéra est bien sûr en français, lui. Bref, un bel objet qui fait payer très cher de la musique déjà connue.

La version enregistrée dure 3h45 ; il s'agit de la version de 1867 (celle de la première de l'Opéra) mais avec le prélude de 10 minutes de la partition d'origine de 1866. Bien sûr on y trouve le ballet «La Peregrina» (un quart d'heure au début du troisième acte). Les chanteurs sont les suivants : André Turp (Don Carlos), Joseph Rouleau (Philippe II), Robert Savoie (Rodrigue), Richard Van Allen (L'Inquisiteur), Édith Tremblay (Élisabeth de Valois) et Michèle Vilma (Eboli). Le chef d'orchestre est le Néo-Zélandais John Matheson. L'interprétation est très homogène et il est agréable d'entendre du français bien prononcé. Ce n'est peut-être pas le cas de l'Inquisiteur qui a un fort accent anglais et dont le mi grave du vers «C'est donc moi qui vous parlerai, Sire» est fort peu réussi. Enfin, un choix qui pourra étonner est celui de Robert Savoie, baryton à la voix beaucoup plus grave qu'on en a l'habitude pour Rodrigue.
