A delicate, subtle Forza,
By Armindo (Greece) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Verdi: La Forza del Destino (Audio CD)
This VERY expensive Forza is a clear, almost studio like RAI broadcast from 1971. If you're after phrasing, Carlo Bergonzi's Alvaro is a lesson of Verdi singing. Nothing is left unnuanced and most importantly the music and vocal line is never compromised. I miss some of Del Monaco's volume which I feel in Forza is needed but both concepts are warmly welcome. The lack of volume is actually a comment that can be made about all the cast members except Cappuccilli who is in his absolute prime and sounds ideal for the role. He's often accused of unsubtlety but I don't hear this here.I had great hopes for Ligabue after enjoying her Amalia in Masnadieri but unfortunately they were only partially met here. Perhaps this difficult role was a bit heavy for her and to be fair, even more famous sopranos haven't sung this well. Most are defeated vocally and reside to dramatic tricks to get through it. Ligabue is still a credible, involved Leonora though and her top is often impressive. Ferrin, Mattiucci and Trimarchi have warm voices and sing well, if a bit light. No complaints about Previtali. Although I enjoyed this recording, I expect a little bit more power from a Forza. Still an interesting performance but the Tebaldi/Del Monaco - Corelli Forzas remain my favourites. |
