Although not as well known as some other of his operas, such as Aida and La Traviata, Don Carlo is a major Verdi opera. And it is treated as such in this recording. Everything about this recording is done well. The conducting and singing are very good and Millo -- perhaps the greatest dramatic soprano to emerge in decades -- is oustanding, as is Ramey. If you're not yet familiar with Don Carlo and don't want to buy the complete opera, you would be doing yourself a favor to get this highlight recording.

Bought this highlights to get the Act 1 friendship duet (so beautiful) and the only four pieces from this opera I like (duet, choral number around the murder of the heretics, Tu che le vanita, Oh don fatale) - have all but the duet already on various CDs, but wanted them together on one.

Thought this CD was very well done and would be good for anyone wanting highlights of what I consider a boring/scandalous/enigmatic opera. I highly recommend it for anyone who likes Don Carlo and wants highlights from it. I threw my copy away.

This one was my first Verdi CD, and definitely it remains at the top of my list. I just love Verdi from the day I heard it. Excellent version of Don Carlo, especially the "Nei Giardin Del Bello" track. I recommend this cd to all Verdi followers & beginners.
