Editorial Reviews

Here Verdi's most popular work - and perhaps the best-known opera of all - has been reclaimed and remastered from an original 1951 mono recording from Rome. Beauty abounds on this historic recording that marries Golden Age Italian singers and a premiere orchestra with the crisp sound of today's audio advances.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Italian Aida July 7, 2013

This recording issues from the Verdi celebrations around 1950, and is a transcription of a radio performance given around that time. The cast are Italian stalwarts of the time. The two most famous are Rolando Panerai and Giulietta Simionato. Yes, the sound is good radio broadcast quality, and the performance a little rough and ready. However, I love this performance for its distinctively Italian feel, and also the interesting conducting of Vittorio Gui. One gets the sense of performers invested in the happenings of the plot. The listener is also rewarded with some really great singing, especially from Simionato. I have listened to this set repeatedly, and learned more about the opera from it than I have learned from 30 years of listening to the Toscanini recording.

This "Aida" is one of a series broadcasts and subsequent phonographic recordings issued on the Italian CETRA label and commissioned by Italy's state-owned RAI (at the time, Radio Auditione Italiane; now, Radiotelevisione Italiana) to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Giuseppe Verdi. It was recorded in Rome on June 12, 1951.

The phonograph recordings of the Italian company, CETRA, are direly remembered for their acidic sound, inadequate documentation and sheer indifference to both distribution and sales by those few North Americans who managed to lay hands on them in the 1950s and 60s. This CD set, however, presents an entirely different face to potential buyers. Remastering carried out by Audiomaster Cologna Monzese, presumably about 2012 (for that copyright date appears on the set along with the original 1951 copyright) has removed the acid to reveal very good 1950s mono sound that displays the solo voices particularly well, as was the style in those days.
