4.0 out of 5 stars The trilogy is complete!, October 19, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Vergebung (Hardcover)
Now, I've read the third in Stieg Larsson's trilogy in both German and English. It's interesting to compare the translations. In general, VERGEBUNG matches very closely with the British edition of THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNET'S NEST. However, one interesting difference is that VERGEBUNG edits out an occasional bit of really foul language or pornographic reference. Also of idle note is that the halfway mark in HORNET'S NEST matches up to a place quite a bit farther (page-wise) in VERGEBUNG, but that variance is due chiefly to translation choices; words, sentences can translate shorter in some languages than others. But, rest assured, if you want to read VERGEBUNG, everything significant that one reads in the English version is also in the German.

In this third novel, the plot starts up right where it left off in the previous book. The question remains, will Salander survive and face her accusers? What will her father's fate be? Will Blomkvist break open the conspiracy of silence that enabled Salander to be mistreated as a juvenile and then as an adult? What will happen when Erika Berger changes jobs? Will Salander and Blomkvist have much contact with each other in this book? Will Blomkvist's sister have a chance to defend Salander in court? Who lives and who dies?

Although VERGEBUNG gets bogged down at times in a lot of procedural explication and makes some misjudgments about how and when to first reveal who the villains are, it does provide a satisfactory conclusion to the trilogy. However, if the late author Stieg Larsson had lived and had been able to complete the ten books he apparently envisioned, I could see this trilogy as but an opening bid into a larger game for Salander and Blomkvist -- and the recurring supporting characters.

VERGEBUNG was a good way for me to practice my German and learn, months ahead of any English translation, how things "concluded" for the young woman with the dragone tattoo and the man whom she had saved and who had saved her. I couldn't wait for English editions to find out what happened. Now there are English translations available, but hopefully there are still folks out there who will want to read this story in German....

Page turner, went through the 800+ pages in 2 1/2 days over a weekend, couldn't put it down. A good ending for 3 books.
