I am an anthropologist, and I had tried using my iPhone 3Gs as a recorder with the free iTalk app, but the sound quality was horrible. I actually found this mic while searching for a new digital recorder and thought, "What the hell, it's only $20 and I can always use it as a back up if necessary." I was thrilled to find that it improved the quality of my iTalk recordings at least ten-fold, to the point that it was significantly better than the Casio recorder I had borrowed from a colleague. It is small and compact, and extremely easy to use - just pop it in the earphone jack and start recording. I have used it in the middle of a noisy cafe, and had absolutely no problem picking out my own conversation. The small windsock actually does relatively well at filtering out other ambient noise. And no problem with the battery dying (as long as you follow the tips below). I now use this recording setup first, and the audio recorder I eventually did buy has become the backup.

I have four suggestions:
1) Make sure you turn your iPhone to "Airplane Mode" before you start recording. First, it keeps incoming calls and texts from interrupting your recording; Second, if you don't, the mic will pick up the radio signal from your phone, resulting in consistent and regular static on the recording. It's not so bad it makes the recording useless, but it is quite annoying.
2) I use the iTalk app and iTalk Sync program ([...]). The free version works just fine, but if you want to get rid of the advertisements, the full version is only $2. It has three quality settings - Good, Better, and Best.
3) After starting the recording, turn off the iPhone's screen (with the long button on top).

As an iPhone 3GS user, the placement of the built-in microphone is not ideal for videoing. The built-in mic is great, but it "faces" the screen.. So when videoing people, I come across as "booming" whereas my subjects of the video are barely heard. This mic fixes that because of the directional nature of the mic. I usually point the mic at the people I'm videoing and it comes out great!

Okay, the cons:
Evidently, every 10 seconds, the microphone pics up this annoying buzzing, rattling, machine gun type sound that lasts for a second or two. It turns out its picking up some radio interference from the iPhone. Putting the phone into airplane mode fixes the problem, but is inconvenient to have to keep putting it into airplane mode (and then remembering to take it out of airplane mode).

The second thing is the wind sock. As the previous reviewer stated, its very thin.. That I do not mind. What I do mind is that it keeps slipping off.. I was thinking of using a rubber band to hold it in place, but have not made that move yet..

I wanted to get a bit better sound on a couple of iPhone clips to email to friends.

This little microphone fits the ticket exactly, it is small, travels well. and improve the iPhone video sound quality 100% (as in twice as good with more richness) which makes good sense, since normally the phone records sound with the little speaking mic.

The microphone have a clever feature, it folds, so you can point it straight for recording memos, or fold it to the side so it points towards the image you are recording.

The wind-sock is a bit too thin for my taste.. but seriously, what did I expect for $20.

Highly Recommended, this is a great little practical microphone for $20, works well with smart-phones.

Oh my god, I should have read the latest review on this product.

The description never stated this external mic does not work with iPhone4.

More over, it doesn't even work with iPhone 3GS or 3G if it is running on iOS4.

This unit turns to a complete garbage just by that fact.

Complete disappointment to Apple for disabling any type of external mic on thier little toy.

Apple will screw themselves by their excessive exclusiveness in their business policy AGAIN.

The manufacturer needs to be absolutely clear that this mic is not compatible with iOS4. FULL STOP. Where in the wide-wide world of sports one might find "Poddio" - I've no clue. The proprietary app I found/purchased was called "VC Audio Pro", but it still did not work with the VeriCorder MiniMic. Back to square one. Still in need of a mic for my iTouch.

I needed a microphone to record voice memos in my iPod Classic.

This one was a terrific buy - decent quality and plugged right it. Unfortunately, it does NOT work with the iPod Classic. I had a feeling, since the description at the time of purchase didn't say anything specific about iPods, but I really needed something and no local store carried any product of the kind.

I cannot give it a single star, because it really isn't a bad product. It just didn't work with my iPod.

It's kind of irritating that I can't use the same mic for nano, Touch and ipad. But since I can't, this one works very well for the ipod touch. Sound quality is great and it picks up from far away so I don't have to chase people around with it.
