The Verilux Brookfield floor lamp is an attractive, well-made and easily adjustable floor lamp. Unfortunately, it has several design flaws, resulting in my rating of only 3 stars.
Firstly, the Natural Spectrum Daylight compact fluorescent lamp that comes with the Brookfield is, in my opinion, unsuitable for reading or viewing color illustrations. While Verilux goes to great pains to convince the consumer that the lamp mimics the spectrum of natural daylight, it actually produces an unpleasant bluish light that reminds me most of the blue-green glare of mercury vapor lamps used in some street lamps. The light the Verilux bulb produces may look like daylight to a photospectrometer, but it does not at all resemble the light produced by the sun on a clear day to the human eye.
Colors, whether in photos in a book or magazine or on textiles or plants, are all shifted toward the blue end of the spectrum producing an uncomfortable, artificial look. I cannot recommend Verilux bulbs for most purposes.
Second, the base of the floor lamp contains a counter-weight made of a concrete-like substance. The bottom of this counter-weight sits directly on the floor, with no resiliant pads supplied to prevent scratching. This should work fine on a carpet, but will scratch or mar wood floors or floors covered with tile or sheet goods (linoleum or similar).
Third, while the articulating arm positions the lamp housing easily and smoothly, the reflector does not tip left or right. This last is a minor quibble but would be nice to have and easy for the manufacturer to provide.
I elected not to return the lamp as I actually like its design. Instead, I removed the lamp socket and replaced it with a socket to accept standard screw-base compact fluorescent (CFL) lamps. I installed a warm white CFL and am now very satified with the lamp's performance.
Verilux uses a proprietary two-pin bayonet socket. Replacement lamps to fit this socket are not widely available except from Verilux or its dealers. They tend to cost more than ordinary CFL lamps. I don't recommend replacing the socket unless you are quite handy with tools are are comfortable modifying the socket mounting and wiring the new socket.

I bought this lamp from another website. Do not do what I did!! The lamp itself is wonderful in every way. I love it and would buy it again in a heartbeat. We have two of the same lamps (but desk-type) in our bedroom, also. I ordered this lamp, originally, from Light Bulb Emporium online. It was made backwards! Yes, shinning towards the ceiling with no way to adjust! It was manufactured wrong. The company was awful to work with and after a month and a half I got the price of the lamp credited back to my card, but no shipping. It cost 6.99 to ship to me and 21.43 to ship back and they would not refund ANY of that even though it was their fault I had to ship the lamp back! I will never do business with Light Bulb Emporium again, and wanted to warn you not to, either! Their customer "service" was absent. No phone or email manners (actually no response at all most times I attempted to get the money credited back to my card.) I finally ordered elsewhere and had my lamp in 2 days with free shipping!

This is a terrific lamp. It's goodlooking, and it throws a lot of clear, bright light that lets me read for hours without eye strain. And unlike halogen, it isn't hot, so I can leave it on longer. The shipping was fast too, and it arrived in perfect condition. All in all, a great buy.

I've bought several Verilux products over yrs and found them serviceable, even if lamps weren't that attractive. Decided to buy this lamp for its looks - big mistake! After only 5 weeks of gentle use in living room., the ballast ring that kept the lamp arm attached to the base pole broke, and the lamp arm fell off. (Other product reviewers have expressed doubt about lamp arm durability too). Lamp had 1 yr warranty, so contacted Verilux. No problem... just pack the lamp up and send back to them w/ check for $6.95 to cover shipping cost of sending me replacement lamp. Except.... the lamp weighs 20 lbs, and it will cost me $107 to send it Parcel Post! Please do not waste your money on this product!

I really believed that I was doing myself and the world a favor by investing in three Verilux lamps for my office (desk lamp, floor lamp, clamp lamp). Three times 23 watts! Great stuff, until a couple of days ago one of them died after a bit more than two years in service. The IRS depreciation period is seven years, and that's supposed to be conservative! I asked Verilux for a return authorization for an obviously defective product; they refused. Bad product, bad company. Make your investments somewhere else!

This is an excellent lamp for reading. Light is naturally bright that doesn't cause eye straining or squinting.

The height adjustment is easy by just pushing the back handle at the end. However, I wonder how it's going to last down road as there is no screw to tighten and keep the height in place. For now it works.

I have never bought a piece of junk on Amazon. I love the feedback that reviewers give and it's usually right on. Well, this lamp is a horrible. And the company, Verilux is horrilble too.

The first lamp I received from Amazon had a broken light bulb. It's no wonder it had a broken light bulb, the factory packaging was terrible. The box literally exploded when I opened it and I had styrafoam all over the room. So I thought, ok, just a bulb I'll call the company like the instruction insert suggests. After being on hold, I was told to call back to reach a customer service member - only 9 - 5 M-F est. So I did, and after holding for 30 minutes I get a person who promptly disconnected me. I'm pretty sure it was a technical issue with the phones, but I decided to use their website to contact them. No response. I wrote them again. No response. I then contacted Amazon and to return the item. But I asked for a replacement figuring the first lamp was a fluke. The replacement arrived today. It just wouldn't turn on. I'm sending it back to Amazon tomorrow.

There are many floor lamps that Amazon offers. Why would you choose this one? Bad product, bad company.

For reading black and white text, nothing beats a Varilux lamp. While the light produced by the bulb is bluish in color and I would not use it for color matching, you can read by the lamp for hours without fatigue.

Packaging by Varilux is not the best. Amazon did admirably with the outside, but what they had no control over was the manufacturer's packaging. One of the two lamps I purchased, the bulb arrived broken.

This lamp does require some assembly and if you are going to place it on a hardwood floor, you will want to cut out a disk of either felt or leather to place it down on because the rough material of the lamp's base is going to mar a hardwood floor.

Overall, I am very satisfied with the lamp so far and will probably get an additional one for my desk at some later date.

Loved the design. Lamp was easy to set up and the light was bright and great for reading and close handicraft work. It would be good if it had a dimmer to adjust brightness though. (Some of the Verilux desklamp models have that feature.)

Worth price for the bright light. I did not get any eye strain. I like the design of this lamp very much.
