UV-C Light Safely Kills Germs

The CleanWave Sanitizing Wand emits UV-C light that has lethal effects on germs and bacteria by destroying the DNA of odor-causing and allergy-inducing microorganisms. This sanitizer virtually eliminates unwanted bacteria, including E. coli, H1N1, MRSA and more.

Quick and Easy to Use

Unlike sprays and wipes, sanitizing with the CleanWave Wand leaves no liquid or chemical residue, making it ideal for sanitizing furniture, electronics and other surfaces that don't tolerate liquids. It's really amazing how it works, mold on the walls, the bed.

If you hold it level in this position, it will turn back on, and even allow a bit of tilting to hit surfaces that aren't perfectly vertical.

The UVC intensity in this Verilux design is so low that for you to truly destroy any microorganisms on a surface you will have to keep it on the surface shining in one spot for over 30 minutes. It does not kill on contact, the intensity of UVC light is too low. In addition, the more you use it, the less UVC is emitted and the bulbs will have to be replaced annually. For you to truly destroy ALL micro organisms (virus, bacteria, mold) on just a pillow surface, you will have to hold the Verilux at every square inch of the pillow for 30 mins at a time. Thus, you would be standing, holding this unit for probably 4-6 hours to truly clean your pillow. You know what's easier, steam cleaning or taking the laundry and washing it. Or using a UVC system design for air treatment installed in your Air Conditioning System. Marketing over hypes the science behind UVC and leads customers to believe in products they shouldn't. This puts a bad name on the UVC products that actually perform, but are priced over $600. I wouldn't waste money on this product or any handheld UVC product.

The endorsements I read are all anecdotal, and have the ring of endorsements we see for things like magnetic necklaces or hologram bracelets. The 99.9% figure seems particularly fishy. We have all seen scary articles about the number of bacteria on toilet seats, telephones, and the like, so we know that techniques for assaying bacteria populations on surfaces exist. It seems to me that if one is in the business of selling something that kills bacteria on surfaces, one should actually measure its effect with respect to different variables and publish the results. I'd like to see where the 99.9% figure came from, and how the test conditions differed from, say, 99.0% or 90%. As Homer Simpson said, "85% of statistics are made up on the spot. 14% of the people know that." As to my qualifications for making these remarks, I am a retired chemical engineer (MIT '60). At one time in my career I worked ten years in a research lab. One of my specialties there was experiment design.

I used to get this itchy feeling when I would sleep on my bed (I sleep naked). I always suspected that it was due to some invisible bugs. And when I saw this wand I immediately ordered for it. The itchy feeling completely disappeared and I kind of felt very comfortable. It is really wonderful. But why only 3 stars then? Because the battery sucks. With one cleaning of the bed the battery is completely discharged! Hope you found the review helpful.

The Verilux CleanWave VH01WW4 UV-C Sanitizing Wand is a good concept, and is something I have been waiting quite a while to purchase. I already did enough research to be a believer in the concept. The unfortunate reality is that this product seems to be poorly implemented. Perhaps it is difficult to implement, and I will update this once I receive a replacement for my first product. But so far my results have been unimpressive. There seems to be a lot of lemons out there.

THE GOOD
++ The unit can be used with the AC adapter connected, which is good since the battery seems to have frequent problems holding a charge
++ The unit includes a travel case, which is convenient for storage and transport
++ The unit is based on UV technology that, in theory, should produce good results after repeated uses
++ Setup is simple (though it does require a small flat head screw driver!) and the included manual is thorough

THE BAD
-- There seems to be a high failure rate in the electronics or rechargeable battery. My first unit did not give me a charge indicator, but seemed to have some juice after over-night charging. Even after leaving it connected for more than the 14 hours they recommend, it never fully charged.
-- While the unit can be used with the AC adapter, it seems to overheat too quickly. So after using it for what seemed like just a few minutes, it would initiate the power off sequence and have to cool off for about an hour before I could use it again.
-- The UV light produced requires repeated slow uses to truly kill high percentages of bacteria, germs and eggs.

The Verilux Cleanwave Sanitizing Wand that was shipped to me was already partially charged. I believe Verilux sent me a returned unit. I plugged the unit in and charged it for the rest of the day and all night before I used it. The first time I used the sanitizing wand it lasted a little over a hour. When the battery is fully charged it will not remain that way for long unless you use the sanitizing wand immediately. If you wait until the next day to use the sanitizing wand it will only last several minutes. The wand will continue to work if you keep it plugged in while you are using it.

This product is easy to use with simple instructions. I bought it to use to clean my daughter's bedding as it kills dust mites and lice eggs among other things. It takes longer to kill those things, but once you do it, you don't have to do it again for a while. I also liked that it kills e-coli, bacteria, the H1N1 virus, and other germs easily. You still have to clean things with a cloth or other cleaner but it sanitizes things you cannot see. My only complaint is I can't really tell if it is long enough...you have to look at the book to see how long you are supposed to go over the area or surface. It is good for sanitizing toys and baby items, computer keyboards, telephones, kitchen counters, bathroom surfaces, and other surfaces which you normally may not get to often.
