5.0 out of 5 stars varilux twilight therapy sleep system
Y'know? I was having a LOT of difficulty falling and staying asleep. My family doc prescribed the usual stuff, like Ambien and even Dalmane, but I'd take the stuff at 7:30 and still be reading/watching TV or whatever well into near midnight, when I just gave up and lay in my bed. One day, she sent me an e-mail describing this product and explained the technology behind...

The instruction to use this light at night before going to bed is wrong. Full spectrum, especially blue light, suppresses melatonin production. That is the hormone that rises just before sleep and falls again towards the end of sleep. One day, she sent me an e-mail describing this product and explained the technology behind it (enhances melatonin production, which makes you sleepy). Keep in mind, I have a bed that was custom made for me, from the floor to the pillows, so a comfortable position to sleep in is never a problem. So, because it was "doctor recommended," I ordered one. First off, this thing is BRIGHT!!! That is usually a deterrent to sleep, but you only turn it on from 30 minutes to an hour before you plan on being asleep. It glows a light blue, and it seems like there's an "aura" around most objects, but it's not very intrusive. They also recommend that you don't put it anywhere that will cause you to directly look at it. So, on my night stand, pointing away from me, is my Varilux. I start to read just when I get under the covers and things begin to get toasty and cuddly, and use this light to read by. The first couple of days really didn't show much, but by night 4, I found myself reading the same page over and over after 20 minutes or so, and I turned the lamp off and went to sleep - ALL NIGHT!! It's been that way ever since. I don't know how, or why, or anything else that explains this, but it actually works for me and as the old saying goes, "if it works, don't try to fix it." I'm seriously thinking about giving these out as late Christmas gifts to my insomniac friends. Would I buy it again? Absolutely. Do I recommend it? Completely. Think of it this way: if it works for you, life suddenly gets much better. If, for some reason, it doesn't (and I can't imagine a reason) work, there's always the return policy, so where's the risk here?

First don't listen to the reviewer that says you can only use in the morning. While you CAN use in the morning you can also use 2-3 hours before you go to bed.

I have been having trouble with insomnia for months now. So much that I was afraid i was addicted to Ambien since I needed it every night. And it didn't seem to work as well. I then tried Melatonin which worked okay the first night or two and then didn't at all. So back to the Ambien.

I bought this light from Gaiam in desperation for anything that might work. No matter how silly or stupid the claim -- yeah, so having this light on for a little while is going to actually do something.

Well, after using it for 4 nights and getting deep sleep every night I'm a believer. I have it upstairs in my office and just put it on while checking email or surfing the web. 30-60 minutes around 8-9 pm. (not right before you go to bed.)

Last night i fell asleep at 10:30 and woke up at 9 AM. I can't tell you the last time that happened!

I hope it keeps working. I'll keep the sleeping pills for emergencies but i would much rather use this light. In fact I'm buying another one for use in the morning.

This light has such a calming affect. I was having trouble sleeping, even with medication. I put it on an hour or so before I lie down and off I go. My husband just loves the calming affect it has on him. Gives the room a lovely glow.

The instruction to use this light at night before going to bed is wrong. Full spectrum, especially blue light, suppresses melatonin production. That is the hormone that rises just before sleep and falls again towards the end of sleep. Exposing yourself to light before bed would shift your circadian rhythms forward such that your body would see your actual clock bedtime as being much earlier in the evening. Thus, you would fall asleep later at night, not at your bedtime. I'm shocked that the instructions say what they do. Use this light in the morning!

1.0 out of 5 stars Cheaply made, overpriced, February 12, 2011
This review is from: Verilux TwiLight Mini Ultra Blue Light Therapy Sleep System (Health and Beauty)
The switch broke on my lamp after three days of use and less than 10 actual operations of the switch itself. I could not make the plastic shroud fit in the metal back as intended. This lamp is an incredible rip-off for the cost. The bulb constitutes the majority of the inflated retail price and is stamped with the chemical symbol, "Hg", for Mercury, a toxic substance not only to ingest but to mine. Don't buy this product if you're concerned about your health. Humans have slept both poorly and well for many thousands of years without mercury-bearing fluorescent bulbs to reset their biological clocks. So may you. Try exercise in sunlight.

2.0 out of 5 stars Had to send it back, January 6, 2009
This review is from: Verilux TwiLight Mini Ultra Blue Light Therapy Sleep System (Health and Beauty)
I only tried it for about four days in a row. For those same four days, I noticed a high-pitched buzzing sound in my room. When I finally figured out it was coming from the lamp while turned "off", I sent it back. I was so desperate that I was willing to pay eighty dollars for a blue light to help me sleep. I guess we'll try anything for a little relief.

Broke after two weeks and I couldn't return it. It didn't really do anything for me at all in the brief period during which it was functioning properly. Total waste of money.

Soft and warm pseudo-sunlight to bring sunshine to a cubed work space. Starts the day off on a nice note.
I have a pseudo-sunlight floor lamp which is ideal for reading.

I strongly agree with the preceding review. All scientific research indicates that this type of light is helpful first thing in the morning, certainly not at night!!! This type of light actually signals the brain to destroy the lingering melatonin which is a hormone that makes you sleepy. Using this light at night to fall asleep would be very counterproductive! Do your own research...

4.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting device, January 4, 2008
This review is from: Verilux TwiLight Mini Ultra Blue Light Therapy Sleep System (Health and Beauty)
I bought this for my wife who has trouble getting a good nights sleep. The lamp was easy to set up and looks pretty cool when active. The light is pretty intense even on the low setting. At first my wife did not like the brightness but is getting used to it. Too soon to tell if it has helped with sleep but I like the way it looks.
