I did some homework on this one.

I was looking for an inexpensive way to internet connect, for email- local weather etc, in a rural area of Michigan. Verizon is the only show in town and cell reception is marginal on a good day, in my location. Forget 4g anytime in this century where I am at. I DID NOT pay $269 to verizon for this item. I am using this on a pay as you go basis, as needed.

If it is unlikely you will get 4G data anytime soon, then go with this. It is simpler and more efficient pulling 3G. You can always upgrade to a new device later.

This "fivespot" is NOS. It lacked a couple items normally supplied but was unused. I pulled the instruction manual from the Verizon website and further info from the support pages. Authorization and set up took a couple hours but generally went without a snag.

I read several comments re the device ID # which is supposed to be on the box, quick start info or sticker on the device. Found none of the above. The ID # can be found on a sticker in the battery compartment. Use DECIMAL, 18 digit number.. You need this # to set up and authorize the device.

I am not into downloading video. This device is plenty fast enough for web, email and skype-phone. Tested all of them. Pay as you go data plans are pricy so you will want to be conservative in use. $50/mo for 1gb? Yup. But I will use half of that maybe, in a month, for essential usage. There are other tips here, to set up your PC or ipad so it isn't needlessly refreshing and downloading stuff on a timer. I am not getting into this. The Fivespot will time out and go to sleep mode after 10 minutes of idle, for obvious reasons.

There is one major catch here. This device is only as fast as the 3G signal it is receiving...

Now that I've got it setup, it's working pretty well. But it took about three hours to setup... my wife spent 1.5hrs at the Verizon store and I just spent another hour or so fiddling with the settings so that it would work off-tether. See very helpful thread here: [...] ... Just an outrageously difficult setup process. The folks at the Verizon store were actually quite helpful... but the details of the setup and configuration stymied them for some time. The keys to the puzzle (for us) was to use the MEID in decimal format shown in the battery compartment as the wifi password... Good luck with your own configuration adventure if you buy this device.

My old 3G Novotel died and was left considering a new 4G plan. A substantial raise in monthly charges. Thought I would give this 3G Hotspot a try. The increase in speed is nearly as good as my home broadband system. I am delighted! It was easy to install and arrived with all the connectors for international travel. I don't know enough about assessing all the technical stuff that makes these things work, but the bottom line for me is that it works great. I have ordered an additional battery for my long trips. A customer service question was answered very quickly. All and all a fantastic combination (not that common these days) of a good product along with customer service that is responsive. Sorry Verizon, but I'm going to continue with my old 3G plan because this Hotspot Modem is terrific running 3G.

I took this to Verizon to set up on my laptop, and after a hour of trying various downloads, I was told that this would not work with my version of Windows 8. I was told by the seller, that I could return, which I appreciated, however, I was not ready to give up. I called Verizon tech support, and they said there was no reason it would not work, and they tried to set it up online. To our dismay, my version of VZ Manager would not accept this. They said they would send me a new disc to download. In the meantime, I went back to the Verizon store, and told them, they need to try something new. The tech there was not real happy with me, because, he already spend an hour and told me it would not work, but I insisted he try again. WALAA.....after the download, it worked.
I have the "old" wifi plan that offers "unlimited" internet, and if I upgrade to a newer wifi unit, the plan changes to the newer, limited plan, so I was determined to stay were I am, and make this work. I want to thank the seller for offering to take this unit back, but I will not have to go that route. I am happy with what I have. The only thing I am missing is the USB cord, which was not in the box. I will need that in order to download the software to run on my tablet. I'm sure I can find one on my Amazon site.

I bought this item just in case and when it arrived it was like new. I know we are all clamoring for 4G performance but right now most folks have 3G and it has become somewhat of a standard. So when disaster strikes I will have a way to keep up on the news and keep in touch. Buy from this seller. They sell some good, stuff.

Had a small issue with the hotspot and these people handled it incredibly. Went well above and beyond in helping resolve it. I cannot say enough good things about them. They care about their customers and making sure they are happy and satisfied .. and well exceeded my expectations.

And yes I am serious - they are superb!
